Tavares, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Tavares High School is the only high school in Tavares and it offers 9th-12th grades. There are also a few smaller schools in Tavares, but they do not offer public education. The first person to settle in Tavares was John Fenton who built his home on land that he bought from the Creek Indians in 1837. In 1849, Doctor John White established an asylum for free blacks in Tavares which became known as White’s Hospital; it remained open until1896 when it merged with Stony Creek Asylum and became one of the original three hospitals operating under state statute number 790 (now called Southwest Health Campus). From its beginning as an asylum through its various incarnations over time – White’s Hospital/Stony Creek Asylum/Southwest Health Campus – this institution has been singularly dedicated to providing care for those suffering from mental illness and addiction out of reach of other health resources or social supports systems available to residents ofcentral Jacksonville County during that period: pre- apartheid America. The second settlement in Tavares was made up of African Americans who had migrated illegally from South Carolina after the end of Reconstruction there in 1896. Tavares was founded in 1851 by John Tavares and his wife, Martha. The Tavares family operated a salt lick on the east coast of Florida for many years, until they moved to Tavares in 1875. Their salt lick was destroyed by Hurricane Andrew in 1992, but the Tavares family rebuilt it and continued to operate it until their death in 2006.
