Tavares is a small town located in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. Tavares is part of the Pensacola-Ft. Walton Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded on December 5, 1892 by brothers John and Joseph Tavares as a farmstead on what is now Fourth Street in Tavares. In 1905, the Tavares brothers donated land to build the first school in the town. That same year, they also donated money for a combined water system and streetlights for Tavares village hall. The first post office was established in 1907 and was called "New Jerusalem". In 1912, the Tavares family donated land to build a new school building that would become known as "Pinecrest". This school served students from kindergarten through eighth grade until it closed in 1978. In 1928, the parents of John and Joseph Tavarez gifted additional land to form what is now Pioneer Place east of the original school buildings; this area became home to many businesses and homes over time including an insurance company and later an RV dealership before becoming residential again in 2009 when Pioneer Place Elementary School reopened after being vacated by its previous owner due to financial difficulties. In 1935, following World War II service members' return home from abroad, there were requests for donations of food and other resources necessary for those living around Pensacola proper such as Tavares Village Hall where people could come together to trade goods or services during peacetime shortages that sometimes happened due to government rationing policies implemented throughout much of Europe at that time (many items such as candy bars were scarce). On October 10th of that year residents from all over Pensacola gathered at Village Hall pursuant to then- Mayor Harry Laughlin's call for representatives from various local businesses interested in contributing excess materials gleaned during wartime production shortages which had become prevalent throughout most Southern US jurisdictions since 1944 with some being quite severe such as areas near Chattanooga Tennessee during World War II whose citizens had stockpiled food due largely to their proximityrant natural gas availability) resulting in the donation of nearly 2 tons worth of surplus produce valued at $2 per pound (though exact values will never be known) which went into storage withinVillage Hall until 1973 when it finally reached its goal: providing enough affordable groceries for all residents regardless having say about price increases associated with increased tourism brought on by expanding military spending resultant from USA victory against Japan two years earlier). The town was named for the Tavares family's many acquisitions of land in that area over the years. In 1892, a post office called Tavares was established. The town experienced somegrowth during World War II as a result of munitions production conducted at nearby Plantation Point Naval Shipyard. After the war, Tavares slowly declined until it completely disappeared from existence in the late 1990s due to declining population and economic conditions.
