Tavares is a small town located in Brevard County, Florida. The population was 5,838 at the 2000 census. Tavares is the county seat of Brevard County. The name Tavares comes from the Choctaw word "tawa" meaning "island." The first European to sight the area now known as Tavares was Captain John Smith on his expeditions in 1607-08. He named it after his ship, Discovery. In 1763, during the French and Indian War, General James Porter's army passed through this area and found two canoes anchored on an island about three miles long and one mile wide which they named Fort King George after their king - George II of Great Britain. In 1821 Captain Wm. Brown sailed from Key West with supplies for Seminole Indians under Colonel Robert Patterson and arrived at Fort King George on January 4th . This was a great stop for traders as they could land there without being molested by local Seminoles who were then warring against Spanish settlers. In 1824 Governor Carlos Manuel de Lara ordered Major James Purdy to explore this area and report back to him what he found north of Fort Pierce harbor. Purdy reachedFort King George on February 2nd but reported no interest by local Seminoles in trading with him so he returned home that day On March 3rd Purdy again reached Fort King George but this time he found that alligatora had nested on top of several masted vessels belonging to Spanish traders shipping between Havana, Cuba and Pensacola Florida After six days of watching these creatures feed it seems as if some sort of magical or supernatural force had protected them from destruction Canon Garrido took command of fortifications hereonand several times during the next year destroyed many pirate vessels raiding Spanish trade off southern Florida A large quantity of goods were taken including slaves; however some sources claim that numbers killed may have been much higher since most captives were never seen again afterwards On October 15th 1827 Commodore John Crayton sailed from Key West with instructions to explore southwestern Florida Bayou St Johns River system . Heading northeast alongshore he discovered an Island lying athwart Beaufort Harbor containing a number of canoes filled with white men - something which Crayton believed must be St Augustine Bay where he intended eventually landing his forces for military campaigns alongshore.. While exploring this bayoushore Commodore Cook metwith several natives who told him about another groupof Indians living near Ceiba Lagoon behind Palatka Point Lighthouse which they called Elegant People because their houses were built like those at Versailles Palace in France - Captains Cook landed therewith around sixty men marching into cedar swamp where they stayed until February 14th when they moved back upriver towards Palatka Point Lighthouse also meetingseveral natives while doing so before moving onto Georgetown Island wherethey started building their own housebut soon abandoned it due to incessant Creek attackswhich continued untilenergetic American troops burned downthe villagein 1865 .. There are still some remaining traces today including a few trees standing tall near Georgetown Island .. Today Tavares is a vibrant community full of outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking/biking/swimming/fishing etc., shopping centers (such as Big Lots), restaurants (mostly Italian), golf courses (Lake Worth Country Club & Doral Lakes Golf Course) , museums (mmorums include House Of Blues & The Volusia Folk Museum), theaters (including Off Broadway Theatre Company productions), libraries, etc... It has received numerous awards such as being one of America’s “Most livable communities” according to Forbes Magazine in 2006-2007 .... In 1839, Captain Tavares donated land to the town for local school purposes, and it became a part of Tallahassee County. When Florida became an official state in 1959, Tavares became its capital. The town has had many different names over the years: Indian Rocks, Nantucket Shoals, Ponce de Leon Key, Great Fort Myers Beach, Marlborough Pointe, and most recently Tavaresville. The present name comes from James Hernando De Soto's 1692 exploration of what is now Florida which referred to it as "Tavaris" or "Tallahassa". There are several museums located within the town limits including the University Museum of History and Art; The USS Constitution Museum; and The First Coast Guard Station at Indian Rocks
