The name "Tavares" comes from the Spanish word "tavia," meaning "place where there are trees." The original settler's name for the community was Juan de la Rosa y Cervecera. It is a major agricultural center with crops such as cotton, corn, soybeans, potatoes and tomatoes grown on some of the most fertile land in Floridian agriculture. The city has two newspapers: "The Herald" and "Seminole Republican". As of 2009, Tavares had a population of 16,829 people living in 602 households. There were 553 businesses in Tavares with an estimated workforce size of 20-plus jobs which produces $458 million worth of economic activity every year according to Business First analysis done for the City Councilman Don Shooter (D-1st district)’s office on behalf of Mayor Buddy Dyer who chairs that body’s Economic Development Committee which also includes representatives from Chamber Of Commerce/Tourism/Infrastructure/Light Rail Transit/. Tavares is a small town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. It was founded by the Tavares family in 1892. The Tavares-Leybold School Board named its first school after the village's founder, John L. Tavares, Sr., on October 1, 1896. The community attained city status in 1959 and adopted a new name - Tavaresville - in that year. The population of Tavares was 2,594 at the 2010 census. The town has a history dating back to 1892 when John L. Tavares founded it on land he had obtained from his father-in-law for $2 per acre (a fraction of an acre would be worth about $25 today). For many years there were no businesses or residents other than those who resided within the walls of the old farmhouse on Main Street; only one grocery store and one hardware store remained until around 1990 when two more stores opened up: One operated by local farmers and another by a group of citrus growers who bought out the original owner. In 2006, three new businesses opened up: A convenience store called Piggly Wiggly, a pizzeria called Papa Johns Pizza and an auto body shop/repair shop called Auto Zone which still exists today as part of Village Hall Plaza Shopping Center! John L. Tavares Elementary School is also located within close proximity to all these businesses making it a popular destination for children attending nearby schools during lunchtime or for parents looking to pick up their child after school without having to go far!
