However, during the Great Depression conditions deteriorated rapidly as jobs dried up and prices for fruit plummeted. The town's economy finally stabilized in the late 1930s when new industries such as steel fabrication arrived to take advantage of cheap labor; however, these days Tarpon Springs remains a relatively small town with few major businesses other than its two schools and two churches. One significant event that took place in Tarpon Springs during the late 20th century was the founding of The Johnsons School District in 1936 by Mrs. John Fenton Johnson and her husband Driggs Johnston (the father of Mayor Jolly Johnson). This school district served both students from Tarpon Springs proper as well as neighboring communities such as Gulfport and Dunedin until it merged into Clearwater Central School District in 1998 pursuant to state mandate following passage of Proposition 98%. Today only about 50% or so of former Johnson students still attend their old school districts' campuses - though some continue to reside within walking distance thereof through daycare services or informal educational arrangements arrangement between classmates - while much larger portions have relocated to newer facilities throughout central Pinellas County including St Petersburg!
