The name "Tarpon" comes from Chief Tarpon's use of tree branches as obstacles in his hunting expeditions during the early 1800s. The first post office was established in 1871, and it operated until 1903. In 1907, J.P. Morgan sent his brother-in-law George Washington Smith to purchase tracts of land east of present day Tarpon Springs for development into what would become Jacksonville Beach. When he died in 1916, his wife Sarah Bunn Smith inherited the land west of Main Street and built a home there known as "Bunny Hill". She continued to live there until her death in 1961. In 1933, Clearwater Clay Company merged with Gulf Oil Corporation to form GulfCorp Incorporated; Tarpon Springs became part of this company's newly created Midwest Division headquarters area along with other companies located near Jacksonville (including Bayport), Pensacola (including Santa Fe), St Petersburg (includingClearwater), Fort Myers ( including Naples) and Tampa (including Tampa). In 1984, GulfCorp divestiture led to deregulation which led to decreased production at many plants across the country and elimination of most jobs throughout GulfCorp; however, some sites such as Clearwater still produced products under various names until 2003 when they were reduced completely to extinction by Hurricane Katrina's storm surge damage that destroyed much plant equipment and records dating back to 1886
