Tarpon Springs, Florida is a small town located in Hillsborough County, Florida. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1892 by Captain John J. MacGowan and his wife Sarah A. MacGowan as a salt lick on the banks of the St Johns River. The first permanent settler arrived in 1894 and named it Tarpon Springs after Major General James Fenton's command post on Pensacola Bay near modern day Tallahassee, Florida which had been abandoned during Spanish America's colonial period due to concerns over piracy and theft by Native Americans. The town was incorporated in 1896 and initially consisted of just a few hundred residents who built their homes along the riverbank or around a salt lick known as "the Gopher Hole". By 1910, however, Tarpon Springs had grown to include an estimated 1,500 people living in homes scattered throughout 7 square miles (18 km2). During World War II Tarpon Springs became one of the largest military communities within Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area with more than 12,000 soldiers quartered at various army camps and bases located throughout Hillsborough County including nearby Plant City and Largo Beach. The town played an important role during both World Wars II as well as Korean War when thousands of American troops were stationed here while also providing recreational opportunities for locals such as fishing trips downriver from downtown Tampa or taking advantage of local golf courses and country clubs that offered hunting opportunities off Highway 85 outside of town limits.
