Tarpon Springs is a town in Marion County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,574 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford metropolitan area. Tarpon Springs is located on the eastern border of Kissimmee and Sanford counties, about 9 miles (14 km) east of downtown Orlando. The first settler in what became Tarpon Springs was Wm. Fenton who arrived in 1823 with his family from England. In 1827 Jno Baptiste de la Motte founded a small trading post named Fort Moultrie near present day Tarpon Springs. A year later Captain John Gist built a fortified house and store at present day Cross Keys Boulevard and US 1 to serve as a base for fur traders working in Southeast Florida during the Seminole Wars. By 1830 there were over twenty fur traders residing in or visiting Tarpon Springs and it had become an important trade center for southeast Florida’s sugarcane industry and its salt production." In 1840, George West bought land adjoining that of Fenton to establish what would become Cross Keys plantation near today's Main Street intersection of US 1/SR 417/US 74. After some years Plantation manager James Robertson increased acreage but did not build any more buildings because he could not afford them due to financial difficulties brought on by cotton prices falling during the American Civil War which disrupted local economy." "Cross Keys continued as one of America's most successful slave plantations until 1850 when it was abolished by order of President Ulysses S Grant following public outcry over its deplorable condition." "Following emancipation CrossKeys passed through several owners before being purchased by Draconian oil tycoon Harry Crane who renamed it Castle Hill after his private castle complex adjacent to the plantation near present day Winter Park." Suncoast Parkway grew out of plans made by father & son Bobby GOMEZ JR &Gilberto GOMEZ SRduring early 1930s when they lived at CastlesHill plantation with their parents George WEST & Lily BEARD".
