In 1911, it was given its present name - Tarpon Springs after Major General John E. Pershing's visit to Hillsborough County and his victory over Spanish forces at San Juan Hill. As Tarpon Springs grew larger and more popular for its natural resources and golf courses, development began on nearby streets that would become Factoids Boulevard and Gulfstream Avenue. These roads are now known as Pershing Boulevard (in honor of Major General John E. Pershing), US-1 (in honor of Admiral James Stockdale), US-27 (in honor of Rear Admiral David Sibley) and State Road 572 (now State Road 904). This growth led to the establishment of several businesses such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Jardine Lumber Company, Wrigley Foods,[2][3] Tropicana Field[4] and Pinellas Lutheran College[5]. As one result of significant growth and investment in new businesses since 2001 (due largely to heavy development adjacent to Interstate 95), several neighborhoods have seen increased concentrations of dense commercial districts including Old Downtown which contains several large retailers such as Macy’s, Sears & Roebuck and JCPenney; Midtown which includes numerous smaller stores; North Druid Hills which is home to two major malls – Best Buy and Sam’s Club – as well as numerous restaurants; while South Druid Hills continues to be an agricultural enclave with relatively low concentration although some new development has taken place there recently in response to increasing demand from residents for more proximal shopping options nearby such as those found near I-95/Upper Marlboro Boulevard exit 7A (just south off US 301). There are also several small towns located around town including Holmes Beach just northwest of downtown and Palm Harbor east of it along UF Gulfport Road The economy primarily relies upon service industry jobs (mainly hotel management) supplemented by agriculture (primarily seafood production) but there are growing numbers of manufacturing jobs associated with tourism products like golf clubs, fishing supplies and other outdoor recreation items
