The history of handguns in Tarpon Springs, Florida began with the first firearms ever made there in 1892. That year, a man named George Haggerty imported a shotgun from Europe and set up a shop on the corner of Depot and Main Streets. The shop was called “The Rifleman’s Shop” and was run by Haggerty and his brother-in-law, Johnnie Draper. It appears that The Rifleman’s Shop started out as just a simple shooting gallery for locals to come and watch. However, over time, it became more than that. In 1907, Gertrude Dodge opened her own gun store in Tarpon Springs. Her store featured both single-shot pistols and rifles as well as shotguns. dodge was very successful at her business and quickly became one of the most influential people in town. She also helped to start the Tarpon Springs Gun Club which served as an important foundation for the later Gun Owners of America (GOA) movement in Tarpon Springs. Throughout its years, The Rifleman’s Shop continued to be popular among locals for its affordable prices, excellent shooting galleries, and wide variety of firearms available to purchase. Even into the latest decades of this century, the shop had a loyal following among firearm enthusiasts throughout Florida!

Guns come in all shapes and sizes, but the most common type of firearm is the pistol.
The first guns in Tarpon Springs were used by the Seminole tribe. In 1861, the US Army built Fort Brooke on the bluffs overlooking Tampa Bay to protect southeastern Florida from Spanish invaders. The army also built a military post near what is now downtown Tarpon Springs to store weapons and ammunition. In 1868, the Stroud brothers started a grocery store in what is now Civic Center Square. At that time, there were few public transportation options in Tarpon Springs and people rode horses or walked to their stores. The Strouds opened their store with two shotguns and four rifles for sale to curiosity seekers who stopped by their shop on Major Osceola Boulevard. In 1886, George Hargrave opened an ice cream parlor on Court Street near where Carowinds Casino is today. That same year, Tarpon Springs became part of Hillsborough County and its first courthouse was built at East Main Street and Court Avenue. In 1892, Colonel John Waddell purchased land east of town from the Seminoles and began developing it into a fairgrounds called Hillsborough Park which he named after his native county of Hillsborough in England.
Tarpon Springs is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 5,827 at the 2000 census. It lies on the Apalachicola River near the Alabama state line. The first white person to live in Tarpon Springs was James Robertson in 1839. In 1845, Tarpon Springs became a steamboat port and began exporting sugar cane from its land grant to Jacksonville, Florida and other parts of the United States. By 1865, Tarpon Springs had become an important railroad junction with connections to Daytona Beach and Jacksonville. In 1901, when it merged with Miami Beach into one municipality, Tarpon Springs became part of Miami-Dade County - becoming one of South Florida's most heavily populated areas after Miami Beach itself had grown rapidly during that time period. During World War II, many military personnel called Tarpon Springs home due to its strategic location on both the Gulf Coast and within easy reach of numerous airfields used by the Allies during that conflict.

From about 1840 until 1871, all pistols for sale in America were mustered-in firearms that had to be registered with the military armories where they were kept and turned over to agents at regular intervals for inspection and destruction by order of commanders or magistrates
The first instance of a gun being made with magazine capacity was the Volkmar-Lohner 8x48mmR rifle. This weapon had a magazine that could hold up to eight rounds. It was designed by Adolf Lohner and manufactured by Volkmar in 1892.
Tarpon Springs, Florida was once a small town in Miami County, Florida. The population of Tarpon Springs peaked at around 10,000 in the early 1940s. However, by the late 1980s it had shrunk to about 2,500 residents. Today, Tarpon Springs is located just east of downtown Miami and west of Biscayne Bay. Tarpon Springs, Florida has been a place where people have resided for many years. The area was originally populated by Algonquian-speaking Native Americans who called it "Tarpon" because of the abundance of tarpon in the area. The first European to visit Tarpon Springs was Marco Polo, who noted its natural resources and reported it as being well-mannered and peaceful. In 1817, Captain John Farragut arrived at Tarpon Springs on his way from Pensacola to Mobile Bay and made landfall here. He named the bay after General James K. Polk, Commander in Chief United States Navy at the time. In 1828, Isaac Weeks built a small cabin on what is now First Street in Tarpon Springs. He became one of the first white men to live in this town when he moved from Jacksonville, Florida two years earlier. By 1830, there were about 10 residents living in Tarpon Springs. In 1832, George Witherspoon opened a store here which soon became known as the best newspaper shop in Central Florida because of its wide variety of newspapers available for purchase or rental. From this business venture emerge some of TARPON SPRINGS' early pioneers including Gertrude Atherton (1863-1941), Mrs. Augustus Baldwin (1877-1967), Hilda Laughlin (1900-1976), Burton Cummings (1914-2006) and Martha Raye (1926-2015). In 1908, William Randolph Hearst established Hearst Castle here which would later become one of his most famous properties around the world. This castle would be used as a filming location for over 60 movies between 1928 and 1998! As part of its centennial celebration in 2008, Hearst University erected a statue located near First Street commemorating these years of history within our community! Today thanks to advancements in technology and development over the last few decades since Hurricane Irma struck seasonally during September 2017 - tourism has exploded throughout Tarpon Springs with more than $120 million invested statewide alone just within 2018 so far!
