In 2001 Tarpon Springs lost its charter as an incorporated city because it failed to meet certain requirements set by the state government including having a police department and fire department that met professional standards; however, it still retains its right to vote within Escambia County and has representation on both the county board of supervisors and the City Council.[2] The first European settlers arrived in what is now Tarpon Springs in 1892 during America's annexation of Cuba: John P Willoughby (a white American) and Wanda Thornton (a black Cuban woman). Initially they built homes along Pensacola Beach where they landed from their ship USS Constitution which had docked at Key West three days earlier on February 5th . They named their new community "Pensacola" after President James K Polk who had just been re-elected president that year In 1916 Pensacola changed its name back to Tarpon Springs when it became an incorporated city under Mayor Jody Hultman after some voters objected to being called "Pensacola" again given that Mobile already had been renamed that year for Governor George Wallace ] After years of lobbying by Mayor Hultman & City Council members talk about annexing Mobile started up again but this time resulted into passage of Lender Act #3 which allowed annexation only if there were no objections from residents & businesses within limits set forth therein This finally happened on November 3rd ,1982 whenmobile annexed tarpon springs annexing all parts bordered by thomasville eastMobile westMobile
The first Europeans to set foot in the area were the Spanish. They landed on Pensacola Bay in 1519, and began exploring the region. By 1526, they had founded a trading post at what is now Tarpon Springs. The town was originally called San Marco de la Vega, but it was renamed for Saint Michael in 1875 after a local patron saint. In 1901, Jacksonville annexed Tarpon Springs as part of its city limits.
