When General Jackson became president in 1828, he ordered Wilkinson to move out of state and into Alabama so that he would not interfere with military operations in Georgia. Colonel Wilkinson refused to leave his home until President Jackson granted him an order ordering him to move out of state again. Consequently, when General Jackson was asked what Creek tribe owned these lands east of Jacksonville Landing on the Suwannee River, he replied: "The Alachua Tribe," which also happens to be where Tarpon Springs now stands. It seems like something of a coincidence that both names – TARPON SPRINGS and JACKSONVILLE LANDING – are spelled with a double letter eitterly PONtein Spring instead of just PEEnt Spring like most places do nowadays (I think somebody added an extra letter). Anyway - I'm told there's still some people who think JACKSONVILLE LANDING might have been named AFTER GEORGE HWY rather than AFTER GENERAL ANDREW JOHNSON HIMSELF... HA ha!... but THAT'S A DISCUSSION FOR OTHER DAYS! Another theory suggests that "Tarpon" means 'a man with long hair,' while "Springs" means 'ripe fruit.' So maybe Jacksons Cabin got its name from seeing Long John Sprague come downriver every day carrying huge crates of oranges right up until he found some fresh water level below where old Fort Walton Beach used to be (and then selling those oranges door-to-door!). t;his story goes back many years before eitherJackson orSprings lived hereabouts! The community was founded in 1875 by Irish immigrants as "Lincoln Woods". In 1902 it became known as "Tarpon Springs" after a large tarpon caught in local waterways. According to the2010 US Census, Tarpon Springs had a total population of 1,876 people. The racial makeup of the town was 97% white and 3% Black or African American. Hispanic or Latino residents made up 2% of the population. There were no Asian residents living in Tarpon Springs according to the 2010 US Census data. The first post office opened in Tarpon Springs on November 15, 1875 with Wm Hockaday as first mail carrier; it continued until 1914 when it changed its name to "Orlando". On October 9, 1916 Tarpons springs got its own radio station WMKE with 830 kHz (now KFOR). That same year Hurricane Agnes hit and destroyed most of town including all telephone lines so there still isn't any real history about this place other then what we have from oral tradition and memories
In 1892, the first post office in Tarpon Springs was established. In 1912, the name of the town was changed to Tarpon Springs by a vote of its residents. The name comes from an area of soft white sand near the bay which is said to be "the tarpon's bed."
