In the early 1800s, Tarpon Springs was a small town in south Florida. It was known for its Gun hammers, which were used to hammer nails into wood. However, gun hammers had not been invented until the 1800s and there were no realhammer-type devices available at that time. The first true gun hammer appeared in 1824 when Nicholas-Jacques Conte created a type of hammer called the "Conte Hammer". This hammer differed from any other handgun hammer in that it had two iron plates that rotated around an axis. The purpose of this rotating plate was unknown, but it may have been used to help with torque or function as a gear train. By 1830, all handguns in use in the United States were being equipped withgun hammers. These hammers were designed specifically for handgun use and they varied greatly in design and function. Some hammers featured multiple iron plates that rotated together, while others had one or two rotating plates only. Hammers also differed based on their size and shape; some were much smaller than typical firearmsheads and could be carried inside someone's coat pocket, while others resembled large artillery pieces (hence their name). In 1857, Adolphus Gibbs developed a new type of handgun hammer called the Gibbs Hammer. This hammer utilized three heavy iron balls that rotated around an axis within a metal crescent shaped housing. This housing served as both theHammer head and striking surface; it could even be turned counterclockwise if desired! The Gibbs Hammer was generally more durable than predecessor designs and became popular among law enforcement officers across America throughout the 1860s and 1870s. Tarpon Springs is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,841 at the 2010 census. The town is located on the shores of Lake Tarpon and is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Hollywood, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. It borders Osceola County to the north and east, Jupiter County to the south and west, and Seminole County to the northwest. The first permanent settler in Tarpon Springs was James Wetherbee in 1836. After some early growth near present-day downtown Tarpon Springs, development accelerated after railroad connections were made in 1859 by both travelers on circuitous routes through Central Florida along what is now US-1 (the St Johns River Valley) and capitalists looking for new land to farm or develop for industry. In 1860 Jno Hickey opened a grocery store at Seventh Street and Church Avenue which became known as "The Grocery Store of Jacksonville." In 1865 Daniel Butler bought out Hickey's interest and replaced him with himself as manager of The Grocery Store of Jacksonville; this would become one of many businesses that would operate successfully in Tarpon Springs during its early years. In 1870 Isaac Dealey established a sawmill near present-day Fifth Street between Church Avenue (now Gadsden Road) and State Road 394 (now US-1). By 1875 Dealey had built two other mills – one on Third Street between Park Avenue (now Federal Highway 442) and State Road 509 (now SR 514), while another mill was built on Ormond Beach Boulevard just north of Third Street about half way between First Avenue (now SR 712) eastward from Easley Parkway/SR 407 southwestward from I-4/SR 828 northwestward from Gainesville Parkway/SR 347. A third mill was completed northeast of Third Street about halfway between First Avenue/US 1E southeastward from SR 337 northwestward from gainesville road junction with I-4/SR 828 about midway between First Avenue eastbound from Gainesville Parkway southeastwestward from I-4 southto US 1E northof Tampa Bay Airport; this mill failed within three years but left an enduring legacy when it was purchased by Raytheon Missile Co., Ltd., later merged into Lockheed Martin Corp., whose plant remains there today. This large industrial growth took place around what are now Fourth Street NW between Second Ave./US 1WNW cornering Third Ave./State Rd 509NNW approximately midway Between First Ave./US 1WSW cornering Third Ave./State Rd 509NNW . From this point onward development slowed as people began moving away to areas such as Winter Garden or Sanford until finally all but one mill closed by 1906 when prohibition caused most businesses operating over six months to be shuttered automatically due to lack of legal immunity under prohibition laws then extant including open liquor stores which were not specifically exempted under law like telephone banks etc.. Only 3 small business owners continued operations after prohibition repealed: 2 men who operated a flourmill on Butternut Drive SW & SE cornering Fourth St.; AND A WOMAN WHO OPERATED A Laundry Service Extending Out To Her House On Fourth St NE Cornering Sixth Ave .. After repeal most businesses closed up shop however 2 women managed To keep Their Business Open And Operate A Laundry Service Out Of Their Home Up Unto Eighties.. This Woman Was Mrs Josephine Davis.. All These Small Businesses Closedup Shop BUT TWO WOMEN KEPT THEIR BUSINESS OPEN BY MAKING USE OF THEIR HOME FOR THIS PURPOSE.. ONE WAS MRS Josephine Davis SHE DID THIS THROUGH OUT THE 1970s UNTIL HER DEATH IN 2001 ALSO CONTRIBUTING TO THE PRESENT DAY SITUATION IN THAT AREA . NOW THERE IS ONLY ONE SMALL BUSINESS OWNER WHICH IS OWNED AND OPERATED BY AN INDIVIDUAL NAME . AFTER REPEALING PROHIBITION LAW NO MORE BUSINESSES CAME INTO operation SO NOW WE ARE IN 2016 WITH THE PRESENT DAY SITUATION . As mentioned earlier one reason that business activity increased rapidly around what are now FourthStreet NWbetween SecondAve./US1WNWcornering ThirdAve./STATE ROAD 509NNWwas because railroad connections were developing through Central Florida along what is now US 1 ([St John's River Valley]), which then attracted capitalists looking for new land to farm or develop for industrypurchasing smaller local businesses thatfailed within three years after repeal (). At this time, many businesses closed down due to the lack of business potential in such an isolated community. However, over time, some businesses reopened and today there are several restaurants and bars within walking distance of most residents’ homes. Today, tourism continues to be one of the biggest sources of revenue for Tarpon Springs as visitors come here for its beautiful scenery, historical significance, museums and galleries as well as its unique shopping opportunities.
