Tarpon Springs is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–Boca Raton–Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name is derived from the 18th century whaling town of Marathon on Pensacola Bay and Spanish for "long cape." The first permanent settler in Tarpon Springs was James Cook who came in 1795 and claimed land east of where present-day Tarpon Springs stands. He named his vessel HMS Cook after himself. In 1836, Captain John Laughlin founded Laughlin's Island near present-day downtown Tarpon Springs as a landing site for American whaleship captains looking for sperm whales off the Florida coasts. By 1840, there were over 100 whaleboats operating out of Laughlin's Island alone. In 1882 Captain George Fenton established Fort Fenton on Signal Hill to protect shipping lanes leading into Cuba through which goods reaching Havana were shipped by sea voyage via Tampa Bay. During World War II, many Japanese soldiers landed at nearby Fort Myers during America's entry into the war and are said to have looted supplies inside the fort before beingevacuated by U.S forces days later without any charges filed against them! In 1904, Jepson Brothers mined phosphate rocks at what is now known as Jupiter Landing Site #1 and soon afterwards began to sell coal from their mine to local power companies in northern Florida (the first commercial coal production in that area). Coal production continued until about 1925 when it was discontinued because of low levels of ore quality due largely to exhaustion of seams located several miles east of present-day Jupiter Landing Site #1; however remnants still exist today as part Southeastern Natural Gas Field property owned by Duke Energy Corporation.. Coal production recommenced again around 1951 when new mines were opened at Jupiter Landing Site #2 adjacent to former Roane Mine workings within sight and sound of homeport; however also these mines stopped operations relatively soon due mainly to high costs associated with extended surface mining operations above ground temperatures well below freezing! Today both sites remain abandoned but occasional relic seizures have been made recently offsite adjacent thereto Tarpon Springs Fork Railroad ran southeast from Hammondsville station northwest along CR 503 south past current day intersection with US 1/SR 527 just south side OF SW Overlook Rd then WSW along Overlook Rd NE toward Brooksville while running parallel & slightly uphill between Pompano Beach Blvd & SR 806
