In recent years, growth has again resumed in Tarpon Springs as more people move into the area due to improved economic opportunities and increasing job opportunities throughout south Florida. Tarpon Springs is a small town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ft. Walton–Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Tarpon Springs was founded in 1881 by J.C. Tarpley and developed as a bedroom community for the military personnel stationed in nearby Fort Walton Beach. The actual name of the town was "Tarpon" until it changed to "Tarpon Springs" in 1903 when it became affiliated with Fort Walton Beach Naval Base. The first post office opened in Tarpon Springs on October 20, 1881, and was called "Pensacola". In 1902, Tarpon Springs joined Ft Walton Beach Naval Base as an incorporated municipality and began to receive its own mail service from that base; however, during World War II it served as Headquarters of naval forces located throughout Southeast Florida including Bayport (now Tallahassee), Port Everglades (now Palm Island), and Jacksonville; also serving as airfields for fighter planes and bombers during the war years.. In 1957, Tarpon Springs annexed part of Panama City Beach which had been vacant since 1940 due to lack of development there by Escambia County government; Panama City beach became an unincorporated enclave within Tarpon Springs Borough while still technically under municipal jurisdiction.. In 1978-79, annexation by Live Oak made Tarpon Springs an independent parish with its own governing borough council but with responsibility for civic services shared equally between both municipalities.. On November 1st 1980 residents voted 3-0 to become a city after more than two decades of planning following annexation proceedings which were initiated by Mayor James Denton who argued that being “the most advanced city” within Escambia County would be a magnet for businesses and other economic activity ; currently this designation applies only to portions of downtown where special provisions have been put into place such as zoning laws limiting building heights etc., making it one of the few cities or towns in America without this distinction .. On December 21st 1988 Hurricane Hugo hit landfall just east of town center killing 24 people & causing over $100 million worth damage – all told – making it one of Florida’s costliest natural disasters ever .. Aftermath included monthslong reconstruction efforts led by then-Mayor Denton & his predecessor Ron Nessman – now mayor pro tempore – plus continued growth & development spearheaded by Mayor Lenny Curry who has led the town through variousupsets over recent years including annexing additional land adjacent to Live Oak along with plans for light rail transit that are currently pending before county commissioners In early 2009 construction began on what would become known as PGA Village - designed primarily as a mixed use redevelopment project anchored around world-class golf courses comprising 463 luxury residences/condos/townhouses ranging from 5 bedrooms/4 bathrooms up to 8 bedrooms/5 bathrooms . This mixed use project will include approximately 100 jobPositive retail space commercial space , public works garage & trails
