It became a town in 1903 and a city in 1923. Tarpon Springs is located on the Gulf of Mexico about twenty miles (32 km) south of Jacksonville, Florida and seventy-five miles (121 km) north of Miami Beach. The name "Tarpon" comes from two Seminole words: "tarapon" meaning “to trip” or “a kind of fishhook” and "ponto" meaning “headland” or bluff. According to one story, what is now downtown Tarpon Springs was once called Indianola Point because it juts out into the bay so much that it looked like a pointy headland. Another account says that when Spanish Conquistador Juan de la Nuez discovered Pensacola Bay he named it La Habana after Havana in Cuba but his native people did not believe him so he changed it to Ponce de Leon for unknown reasons. Whatever the reason, by 1521 Ponce de Leon had submitted to Spain and renamed himself Santa Elena because he had seen an image of Jesus Christ standing on an Isla del Carmen high above Havana harbor while sailing around Cuba Town on his flagship Santiago de Espinosa). As time passed other ships stopped by La Habana Harbor and their crews camped there until they went back home before sailing back out again; thus the first permanent English settlement in this area happened when Captain Cook's Endeavour anchored off Tampa Bay on November 12th 1779 while en route from England to China sea). Tarpon Springs began as just another small fishing village with only 10 residents when development started around 1905 following Panama Canal opening which increased shipping traffic through Pensacola Bayou and led to more demand for land along Pensacola River where inland villages used Toombs Creek as their sewerage treatment plant until 1914 when earthen embankments were built over Toombs Creek providing solid water ground level regulation for batteries ashore during severe thunderstorms & hurricanes

In 2003, Tarpon Springs Mayor Donny Hathaway announced a city-wide initiative to combat crime by creating a city police force. This has led to a decrease in crime in Tarpon Springs since then, although there still remains some risk for criminal activity in the community.
Tarpon Springs was founded in 1875 on the banks of the St. Johns River by Reverend Julius P. Laughlin and his wife, Sarah. The town quickly became a booming agricultural center due to its fertile soil and rich fishing resources. Tarpon Springs remained an important commercial and social center until the late 1800s when it began to decline as a result of increasing population density, economic stagnation, and natural disasters such as hurricanes Irma and Maria.
