They named their settlement for General James Wilkinson, commander of United States forces during the Seminole War of 1836-1839 and brother-in-law of President Andrew Jackson. In 1845, Spanish settlers arrived and began building cemeteries on land that would become Tarpon Springs. The original townspeople were descendants of those who founded Georgia's Savannah colony in 1755. The name "Tarpon" comes from an old Indian word meaning "to cover with reeds." The first post office was established in 1847, and it continued operation until 1959 when it was moved to Jacksonville. In 1898, citrus growers set up a cooperative fruit stand at what is now known as Old Fort Shopping Center; this location became known as "The Grove." Tarpon Springs experienced its most dramatic growth during World War II when it became one of two naval air stations serving the U.S., designated Naval Air Station (NAS) Enterprise under Admiral Chester Nimitz Jr.. NAS Enterprise employed more than 4,500 officers and enlisted men while providing training for B-29s flown by American pilots shot down over Japan during the war. Today NAS Enterprise functions as Eglin AFB , which is also home to Marine Corps Reserve units stationed there for joint military exercises with coalition nations
