In 1966 Tarpon Springs became part of Miami-Dade County as part of annexation by Miami; it has since grown rapidly with new housing developments being constructed along Jones Creek Boulevard throughout downtown and along Indian River Drive which bisects town centerA large shopping district including several high end stores also developed around Interstate 95 near its interchange with US Highway 41/SR 730A As early as 1984 there were plans for a major mall called Dolphin Mall that never came to fruition but did impact other areas such as downtown retail growth along Jones Creek Boulevard bringing more jobs into town while also reducing traffic congestion on I-95 . Today Tarpon Springs continues to grow with an array of shops, restaurants, bars & nightclubs as well as professional services like architecture firms & healthcare facilities

The first school was built in Tarpon Springs in 1893 and the name changed to Beechmont School. In 1915, a cotton gin and mill were built and the town began to grow. By 1930, there were over 100 businesses in Tarpon Springs. In 1935, Hurricane Allen caused extensive damage to the towns infrastructure which led to its fall into disrepair. However, due to donations from local farmers, repairs were made and Tarpon Springs returned to its former glory by 1938. During World War II, many soldiers stationed at Fort Brooke traded goods with local farmers for food supplies needed by their units. As a result of this trade, many new businesses cropped up throughout Tarpon Springs during World War II including furniture store Hometown & Hardware Ltd., shipyards Empire Shipbuilding Co., candy store Milky Way confectionery company (now Candy Kingdom), general store Green Gables Grocery Store Inc., movie theater RKO cinema (now Regal Cinemas), hotel Sunnyside Resort & Spa (now Suncoast Beach Resort) and bowling alley Gulfstream Lanes bowling alley (now Legends Bowling Alley). After World War II ended, many of these businesses closed but some continued operations until they ceased operation or went out of business around 1980-1981 when malls started popping up all over America across different types of industries such as supermarkets/supermarkets/grocery stores/restaurants etcetera
Tarpon Springs was founded on April 12, 1859 by citrus growers and businessmen John P. Sprague and James A. Gilmore as a resort town in Southwest Florida.
