Tampa, Florida has a rich history dating back to the 1800s. The city was named after Captain James E. Tampa and his crew of pirates who operated in the region during that time. The area now known as Tampa was originally inhabited by the Timucua people, an Amazonian tribe. In 1706, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto discovered what would become Tampa Bay. After briefly visiting the area in 1742, Miguel López de Legazpi founded Presa de Fort Hills near present-day Clearwater on Stonington Sound in 1827. The town became a part of Mexico under Mexican rule in 1848 and United States control following its takeover of Mexico in 1853. By 1870, Tampa had a population of 3,500 residents and was developing into a major railroad center. In 1898, during World War I, Tampa became an important military base for American troops fighting on both sides of the war. It also served as the capital of Florida from 1915 to 1917 and again from 1930 to 1935. A new downtown district was built around World War II veterans' housing and businesses along First Avenue South between Broadway and Dunedin Road. However, most of downtown Development occurred after 1945 when Interstate Highway 10 was routed through Downtown via Market Street (now US-1). During post-World War II years there were several large growth periods for Tampa followed by declines throughout the 1970s until 1990s when there started to be renewed growth with strong job prospects thanks to Dormer Shipyards development at Pier 88/Lakefront Drive East adjacent to Hillsborough County Stadium (then known as Tiger Stadium). Growth continued until 2000 when Hurricane Charley destroyed much of not only Downtown but also some sections along First Avenue South including many jobs associated with shipbuilding which ended abruptly afterwards due to budgetary constraints caused by increasing insurance premiums accompanying global economic recession starting around 2002 however much redevelopment still took place before that storm such as renovation/ rehabilitation/rehabilitation of older infrastructure including extensive replacement or expansion of bridges over various waterways within city limits since then giving rise mostly new construction rather than just renovation etc.; this has created what is today one continuing revitalization effort having been ongoing since before Hurricane Charlie even hit
