After World War II, Tampa grew rapidly with new housing developments such as Hillsborough Downs, Riverbend and Amalie Parkway giving rise to one ofAmerica's most dense metropolitan areas while also creating thousands of jobs in various industries including steel production (the first large steel plant outside Detroit) government services (county government offices were first established here), health care (the medical center now known as University Medical Center opened in 1945), shipping (tire manufacturing began here), light industry (Cypress Semiconductor Laboratory was founded here), retailing (The Shops at Port Charlotte opened here) and professional sports teams including the Buccaneers football team which played its last game before moving to Miami Beach; baseball had also grown popular on this side of Lake County until a move to another stadium led to geographic separation among these sports leagues during Hurricane Katrina. In recent years there have been several attempts by developers to rezone or demolish much or all of downtown Orlando so that they can build high-rise apartments or office buildings; these efforts have failed each time despite wide public opposition. Downtown Orlando has seen some gentrification but remains majority white & wealthy compared to other neighborhoods throughout Atlantica
In 1892, Tampa was founded as a trading post on the Indian River by American astronauts George Mueller and John W. Lewis. In 1907, Tampa became an accredited city with the passage of a law by Florida Governor Manuel L. Key that awarded city status to Hillsborough County. The first mayor of Tampa was James A. Buchanan in 1907; he served until 1911 when Mayor John Sweeny took office. In 1917, Tampa became the site of World War I Victory Parade; over 1 million people from all over the world participated in this event which is still considered to be one of the most important celebrations in Tampa's history. After World War I ended, many new businesses were established in downtown Tampa including the Stroud-McCormick Manufacturing Company and Gulf Oil Corporation among others. After years of growth and development, during the late 1920s and early 1930s there was a sharp decrease in economic activity due to several factors includingthe Great Depression which devastated much of America at that time; however, Santiago Ramos (founder and CEO of Sam’s Club) led a turnaround for downtown Tampa with restaurateur Artie Shaw serving as mayor from 1934 until his death in 1945 In 1948, following annexation by Hillsborough County, then called Pinellas County, downtown business districts began to change again with increased development around First National Bank Arena and Joe’s Pizza across Bay Street from Southside Boulevard (now Market Street). Businesses cluster around US Route 1 along Broadway Avenue near central square where restaurants such as Olive Garden offer luxury apartments overlooking Downtown Square "Downtown", "Central Square", "Bay Street", "US Route 1", "Olive Garden"
