In 1853, a blacksmith named Augustus Mifflin developed a new type of gun that could be fired automatically with a powder charge and ball. This weapon was called the “Mifflin Gun” after Augustus Mifflin, its inventor. The first military kerspliffguns were also made in Tampa during this time period. In 1907, Mayor James Buchanan set up an ordinance regulating firearm sales and possession within the city limits. This ordinance became effective on July 1st of that year. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. The history of Tampa dates back to 1821 when exploration teams from St. Petersburg explored the area that includes now Tampa and began trading with Native American tribes. In 1825, Spanish explorer Amedeez de las Casas named the bay "Largo de Ybor" after an Indian chief who had been killed there by Spanish settlers in 1592. The name "Tampa" was applied to what are today downtown streets in 1828 when Captain James Cook discovered land within sight of Tampa Bay on his return from a voyage around Asia Minor. He named it "Cook's Harbour". In 1836, captain John Fiske ordered alligator hunting off shore at Largo de Ybor and while shipwrecking onshore found two large alligators which were exported to England for use as specimens (the first extant gators). In 1861, during Confederate Ulysses S. Grant's military occupation of Florida, General Andrew Johnson authorized relocation of some slaves near Fort Fisher due to their proximity to Union forces stationed nearby at Port Hudson Peninsula; however this order never arrived because Union troops burned down Fort Fisher instead on November 12th 1865 during the Siege of New Orleans while under Grant's command. On January 1st 1907, annexation by Hillsborough County made Tampa one of twenty-six counties in Florida annexed by that state following approval by Governor Lawton Chiles. The original white residents who lived along Pinellas Avenue south from Ft Myers Boulevard soon left for higher ground surrounding Gulfport where they founded what would become Clearwater Beach and Sunrise Key communities (now Suncoast) before returning to central Tallahassee after World War II ended and developing newer neighborhoods north including Hillsborough City proper which became known as "The Arts District". The construction boom following World War II led to increased development in downtown Tampa but also outlying areas such as East Lakeview Terrace and West Park Drive east of Lowry Road leading eventually into Art Deco styles architecture seen throughout much of Southwest Florida including old government buildings like Old Capitol Building now used as a hotel or office complex or University Plaza building now home to Testudo BBQ restaurant

Tampa is a city in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,545 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hillsborough County. The first permanent settler in Tampa was James A. Harkins, who arrived on an American Revolutionary War ship in 1794 and settled on what is now First Avenue South. In 1825, George Washington's grandson George Washington Polk built a cabin here while touring the area as part of his presidential campaign trail. The town name came from a swampy lot near present-day Atwater Street and John Fowlkes Boulevard where early settlers had to wade through knee-deep water to get to their homes. In 1873, Tampa was incorporated as a town under state government control and became its own parish with jurisdiction over all of Hillsborough County save for one small hamlet—Downtown Tampa—which still falls within the city limits today. The growth of Tampa during the late 19th century paralleled that of nearby Jacksonville which had experienced similar explosive growth due to industrialization and new transportation technologies such as railways and automobiles; by 1905 Jacksonville had outgrown Tampa's bounds several times over for both population (it would grow by 50% between 1900-1910) and land size (the original site of downtown Jacksonville would be donated by Jaxonites to the city in 1922). By 1907 Tampa had become an international center for trade due largely to its location on Sam Houston Boulevard just south of Clearwater Bay; it became known as "The City on Bayshore" because much business activity took place along Clearwater Bay’s shores including shipping, fishing, shipbuilding, dredging operations and real estate development among others. During World War IImany jobs were created related to naval munitions production at Fort Sill outside Oklahoma City – but many people left after Pearl Harbor when war began; many residents went into exile or moved away before or after the war ended In 1945Tampa was merged with St Petersburg into one municipality called Pinellas County under state law which did not take into account local sentiment nor elected officials wish for secession from Pinellas County . Two years later Jupiter also seceded from Pinellas County form state government creating what is now Broward County
The city of Tampa was founded in 1835 by Captain James F. Brooke, a British military officer who had come to America to help with the Seminole Wars. The area around present-day Tampa was first inhabited by the Timucua people, who were then part of the Arawakan tribe. In 1837, the Spanish established an outpost in what is now Tampa Bay and began to explore the area for potential land grants. In 1839, American Commodore John D. Sloat claimed ownership of all of Florida for US$2 million and purchased 5,000 acres near what is now Hillsborough County. The following year, Brookesville was founded as a trading post on the east coast of Tampa Bay. After purchase, Commodore Sloat renamed it Fort Brooke after himself and opened it to Natives on December 10th, 1840. In 1845, Governor Charles Evans Hughes appointed Jno Eller as surveyor general of Florida with instructions to make a "full report on all points within this territory." Eller's report found that there were no useful mineral resources in Florida but recommended that Miami be named the capital of Florida because it seemed like an ideal location for a new state: "It would be only natural that such an important point should be at once placed under one roof; and as Miami has been since its erection as capital we may say that it is not far from being animated by every good purpose." On November 25th, 1846 – just two months after Hughes' proclamation – Miami voters passed a resolutions ratifying his choice as capital and approving $5 million worth of bonds issued theretoto build a city hall and other public buildings including Episcopal Cathedral (later known as St John's Catholic), State Capitol (now home to SouthFlorida University), Supreme Court Building (now home to Hillsborough County Courthouse), Masonic Lodge No.1 (now home to Discovery Museum) and Parkland Cemetery (later known as Everglades National Park). The cornerstone for City Hall was laid on January 12th,1847 while construction continued on nearby Methodist Church which served as both City Hall Annexe(s)and Mayor's Office until 1925 when it became known simply as City Hall Tower/City Hall Annexe until 1974 when it was razed due to arson
