Bullets in Tampa, Florida date back to the early 1800s. The first shot heard in the city was fired on September 2, 1822 by Captain John Fenton during a battle with the Seminole Tribe. The gunshot caused severe damage to a building and injured two people. Bullet holes can still be seen in the wall of the old courthouse today. In 1827, Captain Fenton’s son, Commodore John Fenton, led an expedition against Native Americans in what is now Hillsborough County. A bullet from this battle remains embedded in a tree near Clearwater Boulevard and US-1. Commodore John Fenton is buried at Pinecrest Cemetery in Tampa. In 1898, bullets were used to kill Spanish soldiers during World War I when American forces invaded Cuba under Generalísimo José Martínez de la Torre. Cuban nationals living in Tampa were among those killed by bullets from United States military fire as they guarded their homes and businesses. Between 1918-1945 there were over 630 shootings reported which left 20 people dead and 260 injured…..the majority (more than 60%) attributed to mugging or robbery….The fact that so many shootings took place without any fatalities or injuries speaks volumes about how safe it was for pedestrians and motorists alike then……………After 1945 pistol sales decreased significantly as handguns replaced rifles as our primary means of defence………. nevertheless many reminders of past gunfire remain around town including large mural depicting dozens (or even hundreds) bullet holes through various parts of Building #2 on Downtown Square

On December 12th of 1861, Governor David Aiken issued an executive order ordering all males in the county to present themselves at a military installation or service station within three days for registration purposes; this order caused great outrage among many residents who saw their homes sacked and burned by Confederate soldiers during their occupation of Hillsborough County (the infamous "Black Saturday"). On January 25th 1862, Governor Aiken issued another order providing for martial law in Hillsborough County if any violence or disorder occurred; this order led to several raids on civilian dwellings by Confederate soldiers disguised as militiamen seeking to loot or burn property without causing harm to anyone. The Battle of Fort Pickens took place on April 12th 1862 when Confederates attempted to storm into town from rural areas near Fort Pickens; they were repulsed with heavy casualties both inside and outside the fortified post ( virtually every house in downtown Tampa was destroyed). ThisBattle marked one point where Confederate efforts failed long enough for Union forces under General John Totten to capture key miles northward along I-95 leading up towards Jacksonville (later Jackson) City limits - an event which would eventually lead to hostilities between North Carolina and Florida). After brief skirmishes around Doaktown before being pushed back southward under cover of darkness following successful shelling by Union artillery batteries at nightfall on April 13th 1862,[3], Confederate General Pee Wee Robinson withdrew his army from Hillsborough County into northeastern Florida pending further orders from Richmond.[4] Shortly thereafter Captain Nathan Hines[5] arrived at Fort Pierce carrying dispatches reporting large numbers (>100%) black men collected en masse near Lake Okeechobee southwest of Tallahassee [] - these men were purported to be deserters from Union armies serving in Georgia/Tennessee/Alabama/Mississippi etc., some attending meetings organized by white abolitionists["6]. By early 1865 there were reports[7]of free negroes living throughout much eastern central Florida having fled North Carolina prior too uprising there against pro slavery policies pursued by South Carolina [8][9]. While most likely true only a tiny percentage[10][11], it provides interesting context for understanding how race affected local politics beginningprioritization given Jim Crow laws located almost exclusively within Southern states ruling over multiracial regions such as Tampa Bay Area .
