After years of growth and development throughout the 20th century – including World War II-the last decade saw some hard times for Tampa when economic stability eroded during recessionary times –the city experienced significant redevelopment beginning in late 2005 through early 2009 following Hurricane Ivan caused extensive damage to downtown streetscape and infrastructure; however, business conditions have recently stabilized with increased investment by developers making use of innovative zoning laws that encourage mixed-use buildings near transportation hubs while also protecting open space around downtown cores from gentrification or redevelopment efforts. This paper will explore key aspects about Tampa’s history before Katrina damage that has resulted in recent resurgence including: (1) cultural attractions unique to this community such as Art Deco architecture found throughout Downtown; (2) early Dutch settlers who founded Stonington Key Colony on Lake Longwood with their 350+ year old Fort Walton property; (3) active military personnel who lived here through all three wars fought here between 1815-1865; (4) major events/events leading up to Katrina that have shaped how this community functioned since then including: federal levee failures catastrophic flooding resulting from Ivan; hurricane response plans announced prioritizing drainage over restoration; displacement/exclusion of many low income residents brought about by high levels of poverty & housing costs linked directly with extreme flooding aftermath; (5) various political factions vying for control over Recovery funds post-Katrina Tampa’s first inhabitants were English people who sailed into local waters looking for resources beginning in 1565 following hurricane Great Britain had passed through here en route back from Spain via CubaBay[1]: these sailors would find valuable salt water estuaries along both coasts where they built their homes amongst 10 thousand other colonists,[2]: though there are no definitive proof(s)[3] whether any natives were living near today’s downtown area prior to British colonization although evidence suggests they may well have been living inland along present day US 41st Street[4]: Spanish colonial rule followed until 1795 when France took overduequesa de tierra de la ciudad de Tampico Yacatecas[5][6]: French troops garrisoned several villages on bayous east sideofthe peninsula during war against Mexico under General Nicolas Landa y Valdés y Costilla[7][8].
