The first permanent settlements in what is now Tampa were made by Spanish explorers on what is now the East Coast of Tampa Bay in 1565. The area was part of the Plantation colonies established by Spain along the Gulf Coast of Florida during the 16th century due to its strategic location between New Spain on the Mexico side and England on the Georgia side. In 1764, after British forces destroyed Fort George at St Petersburg, Spain ceded Hillsborough County to Great Britain under Treaty of Paris; however, it remained part of Spanish Cundinamarca until 1798 when it became part of United States under Article III Section 2ofthe Constitution. When American colonists arrived in 1775 they founded their own settlements around what are now Pinellas Park, Clearwater Beach and Fenton Beach on Hillsborough Peninsula - this area would become known as North Tampa/East Tampa. In 1821 a road from downtown Jacksonville led through present-day Clearwater Canyon into Hillsborough County; this road would become known as State Road 508 or SR 508 until 1912 when it became US Highway 1 following federal annexation by Florida that year. In 1836 Governor John Kinney issued an order compelling all military officers who had served under General Andrew Jackson during his successful Creek War against Indians east of Lake Okeechobee to leave southwestern Florida; these soldiers were later reabsorbed into local militia units and given new unit numbers such as Company A (2nd Regiment), 5th Regiment Infantry (Jackson's Own), 11th Regiment Infantry (Creek Wars volunteers), 12th Regiment Infantry (Jackson Volunteers) etc.. This order was motivated by Jackson's belief that any remaining Indian resistance should be crushed before settlers could arrive and take up arms against him; instead many Native Americans perished because most refused conversion to Christianity or fled when discovered Tribal land had been acquired without their consent The first streetcar service ran between Downtown Jacksonville andClearwater Beach starting on December 14,1892 using horse drawn carriages called "Coast Guard Cars". On May 10, 1896 an electric streetcar line began running between downtown Jacksonville andFenton Beach using streetcars called "Hillsborough Line" which ran along current SR508 between those towns until 1938 when it converted back to horse drawncarriages called "Quesnel Line". As early as 1892 there were plans for secession fromFlorida if term limits were not met for governor candidate James Buchanan but no action was taken because Buchanan won election easily In 1907 boundaries changes resulted in Northeast Tampa becoming West Hillsborough while South Tampa became Southeast Hillsborough based off census results that year . In 1959 South Seminole County formed separate fromWest Seminole County Proposition 9 abolished special elections withinSeminole County exclusively for gubernatorial decisions while still allowing special elections within West SeminoleCounty for other countywide decisions
