Tamarac is a census-designated place located in Brevard County, Florida. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. The CDP covers an area of 9.1 square miles (25 km²). It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Hollywood metropolitan area and is bordered by Kissimmee to the east, Sanford to the south, and Ocala to the west. The name "Tamarac" comes from two Seminole words: Mapagaca meaning 'place where cotton grows' and Tamarack meaning 'a tall tree with fruit'. In 1836, Captain John Sellers discovered sugarcane growing on a plantation near present-day Tamarac. The plantation was renamed Sellers Island after Captain Sellers. In 1901, another plantation, White's Plantation, was bought by A.J. Rooney and developed into what is now known as Rooney Parkland with horse racing being one of its main attractions until it closed in 1945 due to World War II military activity on the island which destroyed many homes and plantations along with much valuable wooded land including some that still remain today. In 1959, an electric plant called Gainesville Electric Light Company was built on what is now US Highway 441 between Oviedo Road and US Highway 714 just north of present day Gulfport Boulevard in Gainesville Village. This company became Gainesville Power & Light Company when it merged with Jacksonville Gas & Electric Company in 1974. When Jacksonville Gas & ElectricCompany merged with Florida Power & Light Company in 1987 they added TAMARAC – then known as Hernando County – to their territory making it a part of Palm Beach County which included Miami Beach proper at that time.. At that time TAMARAC became unincorporated so it could be managed by both county authorities as well as state authorities underFlorida Power&LightCompany management.. On January 1st 1999 TAMARAC joined Palm Beach County pursuant to South Florida Sun Sentinel article entitled "Coastal community gets new power". That same year TAMARAC received its first electricity transmission line from Tampa Edison Transmission Corporation providing power for Everglades High School…..In October 2002 Hurricane Andrew struck landfall about 15 miles (24 km) southeast of PALM BEACH – causing significant damage to both Rollins Colliery Rd/USHighway441 east of town (which remains closed today due to water damage)and loss or destructionof entire villages within 2 mi radius……AfterAndrew passed over town most residents returned home but reconstruction continues apacewithmaintenance crews working 6 days per week….TodayTamarac has 3 small stores operated by Sunrise Development Authority….As manyas 20 households generate their own energy thru solar panels…..Many residents also use waves off shore for heat or light… A new elementary school opened in 2006 named Forster Middle School adjacentto TPC Las Americas Golf Course across Fromco Drive from where students walk to Universal Studios theme park There are several churches located throughout Tamarac such as First Baptist Church (founded 1909), Christ Episcopal Cathedral (born 1916), Methodist Episcopal Church (born 1918), Presbyterian Church USA (1918), Holy Cross Catholic Parish(1924), Sacred Heart Catholic Parish(1945), Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Parish(1959) and St Joseph’s RomanCatholic Parish(1973). On November 5th of that year an act to create the city of Coral Gables was passed and signed by Mayor Manuel Diaz with the support of then-Governor Carlos Mancini and then-Commissioner Julio Garces Jr., setting forth the boundaries for Coral Gables which would eventually be established as what we know today as Coral Gables Tamarac has been through many ups and downs during its history but has always managed to stay afloat thanks to its supportive community and vibrant economy
TAMARAC, FLORIDA - The town of Tamarac was founded in 1892 by John L. Ricketts, who purchased the land from the Seminole Indians. In 1932, the name of the town was changed to Tamarac Lake after its creation as a result of an agreement between Florida Power and Light Company and the Seminole Tribe. The lake is now part of Stonington Bayou Park.
