The Tamarac, Florida area was first settled in the 1830s. In 1898, a sawmill and gristmill were built in the town. Tamarac is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,353 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Tamarac is located on U.S. Route 1 and has a post office with ZIP code 32225. The first white settler in what became Tamarac was James Aiken who arrived in 1836 via the East Coast Trail from Georgia. He named his new land "Tamarac" after his mother's name, Martha (Majerica). After Gainesville and other towns were founded in Polk County, Tamarac remained the county seat until 1868 when Jacksonville took over that role. In 1912, James Waddell built the first motion picture studio in America on Warrenton Road between Old US 1 and FM 2218 just east of today's intersection of State Road 724 and US 1E (former SR 724/1E now State Road 810). In 1923, Waddell opened what is now known as The drive-in theater which screened films outdoors throughout the summer months outside on an old tobacco farm near where Interstate 95 meets Warrenton Rd today. From these beginnings came Hollywood film industry powerhouse MGM which owned or leased many studios through its MGM-Sunset Boulevard studios complex across Central Park South from where it filmed all original feature films up until 1978 when they were relocated to Culver City California due to economic reasons only then did Sunrise Boulevard become Sunset Strip leading west to downtown Los Angeles once again becoming one continuous entertainment district with movie theaters dotting every inch of Downtown LA's historic core including this one block south of La Brea Ave/Walking Street) Most recently absorbed into this modern day Hollywood Walk of Fame – corner of Larkins Avenue & Olympic Blvd.,ollywood’s answer to Times Square – are two neon Muller signs thatonce adorned Main Street near where I-95 meets Warrenton Rd./SR 724 today stand tall above both homes of local businessmen Harry Cohn (the initial founder and general manager of Columbia Pictures)and Walter Reuther (founder and CEO thereof Universal Studios) for their contribution thereto during more than fifty years! Tamarac is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name comes from the Algonquian word "tamarac" meaning swamp. The first European sighting of Tamarac was on November 16, 1513 by Giovanni da Verrazano when he sailed along what is now Biscayne Bay and saw an area that he thought to be a swamp because of its appearance. He named it after his patron saint, St. Thomas Aquinas (circled in blue), because there were many swamps near his home town of Rimini, Italy. In 1884, James Witherspoon Clements founded Clementsville Colony which became Tamarac in 1888 when he bought 5% of the land around present-day Tamarac from Major John Houstoun for $5 per acre ($140 per lot). When water levels began to rise and flow away from Lake Okeechobee more quickly than expected during construction of Interstate 95 through this area (the lake being created by damming part of Everglades National Park), developer William Pritchett resold development rights to developers including Clementsville colonists for $2 per acre ($32 per lot). With no surface water available to recharge groundwater reserves like those near Palm Beach Gardens or Jupiter Hills, residents had to taps into underground aquifers which led to some controversies over how much water people were allowed to use without obtaining a permit from state officials; this prohibition stopped following1975 restrictions on usage authorized pursuant to amendment thereto by then Governor Charlie Crist In 1984 though efforts were made by Mayor Julio Iglesias and Speaker Oscar Diaz Sr., City Manager Gail Burton successfully lobbied then State Senator Don Whitehurst (then running for Governor) not only for passage but also signature On March 3rd 1984 Gov Whitehurst signed Senate Bill No 787 amending Chapter 11 Title IV - Water Management Regulations relating thereto within limits prescribed therein as set forth herein It authorizes city staff with environmental consulting services “to develop” its own program for managing stormwater runoff that would take into account public input about possible uses such as agricultural irrigation or groundwater recharge opportunities This program would have allowed annexation of certain parcels currently zonedindustrial and light industrial lands east/southeast of I-95 between 95th Street SW and SW 6th Avenue SE holding potential site locations for future development if approved by county commissioners
