Tamarac (pronounced TAM-uh-rac) is a town in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 24,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The first white person to set foot on what is now Tamarac Island was Captain James Cook on his HMS Resolution in 1778. He and his men were exploring the eastern coast of Florida when they sighted an uninhabited island off the coast of Cape Canaveral. They named it "Tamarac" after their ship's captain and first mate, John Hawkins. In 1819, American explorer Stephen Cate had been searching for a Northwest Passage to Asia when he discovered land that would eventually become Tamarac Island. He named it after himself, as did other early explorers such as David Dickson and Richard Ewing who also explored the area during this time frame. In 1824–25 Lieutenant Commander Augustus Willoughby party from HMS Beagle sailed upriver and landed on what would become Sandy Hook point on what is now Tamarac Point Boulevard while continuing their journey upriver to explore further into Florida’s interior; they later called this point “Willoughby’s Landing” Naming rights to land east of that point went to whaling company Pemberton & Sons in 1838 which then gave rise to nearby Pembroke Pines and more recently much remains today including a lighthouse keeper’s cottage dating back to 1892 which opened its doors July 1st Celebrating 350 years old! It wasn't until 1898 that another human being set foot on what would become Tamarac Island when bounty hunter/privateer Samuel White set ashore with his Launch Millais near present day Fort Myers beachfront about half way between Cape Canaveral National Seashore Road And Dock Rd just north of US 131 Northwest Of Tarpon Springs This marks not only White's first landfall but also America's first Recorded Visit To A Virgin Islands Territory! marking an important event in Ussher's landing Attempting To Connect With The Known World! Tamarac is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It is located on the eastern bank of the Everglades and was founded by white pioneers in 1892. The name means "tamarack" or "palm tree." The firstTamarac post office opened in 1893. The town developed around a railroad station, which was destroyed by a tornado in 1912. Tamarac's population reached 7,500 by 1915, but declined to 3,000 by 1940. In 1990, the town acquired its current boundaries following a referendum vote. As of 2010, it had a population of 4,912 people. The community was originally called Indianola before being renamed for Captain James Avertine on July 9th 1892 after he made an unsuccessful attempt to cross the Everglades with his crew and goods convoy from Key West to Tampa Bay via Tamarac Creek. Captain Avertine's expedition joined two earlier expeditions organized by Colonel John Witherspoon that attempted crossings between Tampa Bay and Sarasota Lakes on Lake Okeechobee many weeks earlier but failed due to bad weather conditions and lack of food supplies at that time within what is now Miami-Dade County limits (then including parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties). Tamarac became an official municipality on December 1st 1921 when it merged with neighbouring Indianola Township along with six other municipalities in the county during mayoralty consolidation efforts led by then-County Commissioner Harry Biddleley who saw this as an opportunity to improve public services without having to increase property tax rates which would have been necessary for such endeavors as building new jails or fire stations etcetera; although all these villages lost their municipal status upon annexation into the city of Miami-Dade some years later because they did not meet certain eligibility requirements such as having “a population over 50000”.) There are no extant records from 1922 or 1924 detailing how much land Tamarac actually possessed; however it is generally thought that most likely annexation took place west of I-95 where present day streets run parallel to US 41/I-395 prior to reaching Tamarac proper - TAMARAC WAS TOWN LONG BEFORE Miamians connected those areas through expressways! Aftermath: After becoming part of Miami Dade County, tamaracks were logged almost immediately due to their potential value as fuel for power plants across downtownMiami and elsewhere throughout South Florida – logging stopped about 1957 In early 1960s newly annexed Coral Gables golf course began construction next door (north side)of old elementary school site & soon afterwardsTamaractown subdivision sprang up near intersectionof NW 10th Ave., NW 2nd St., NW 3rd St., SW 8th Ave.—this area remains today known as TAMARAC GOLF COURSE RD.—following construction nearby homes began popping up like mushrooms—during 1966 thru 1970 unincorporated area east & southeast of original school site became known as TAMARAC PARCEL
