In 1830 he donated another tract to become Tamarac Plantation where he resided until his death in 1840 In 1841 Pedro Menendez bought some additional land from Governor Perez which became known as Menendez Heights On May 15, 1861 General Andrew Johnson issued orders authorizing military operations against Seminole Indians living east of Fort Brooke At that time only about 100 people lived inTamarac but by 1865 it had grown to over 6 hundred people due mostly to soldiers stationed there during the Civil War During Reconstruction Tamarac was one of several towns designated as “Black Townships” because African Americans constituted nearly all its residents . Black Troops garrisoned the town until white troops took it over on April 11th 1947 ending Reconstruction . On that date public buildings such as schools and businesses closed while African Americans continued working behind closed doors
