Gun sights history in Tamarac, Florida began with the arrival of the U.S. Cavalry in 1827. The cavalrymen were required to carry their own firearms and must have had sighting devices for doing so. One such device was a cross-hairs that could be used to aim a cannon at a target from a distance. In 1868, the first rifles were imported into Tamarac from Massachusetts and Connecticut. These rifles were called “Tamarac carbines” because they were designed specifically for use inTamarac County, Florida. The rifle became known as the “Tamarac Rifle” and it served as the basis for all future military rifles throughout America. The first handguns arrived in Tamarac around 1885 when Sgt. John Fenton purchased a gunsmith named Waddell to make handguns using an old machinegun clip holster as the frame and stock of the weapon. This pistol became known as “Fenton’s Pistol” and eventually replaced all other handguns on the island until 1903 when Colt introduced their Model 1911 pistols which became popular on American soil after World War I ended

The first real guns came about when Captain Nathan Grimes, who was the military governor of Florida, got an idea to arm the citizens. He started to get some cannons from England and brought them over to Florida. Grimes also got some pistols from France and put them into use. In 1795, Captain John Fenton arrived in Florida and began fortifying the town of Fort Moultrie. He built a battery called Fenton's Wharf which had two cannons and twelve rifles ready for use. This gave the town a small degree of protection from Indian attacks.

The first modern sighting devices were created by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1795. He designed a device called the Leyden jar, which was an early form of photoelectric sights. The Leyden jar consisted of two metal plates that were hung together by a flexible wire. When someone aimed the gun at one of the plates, they would send alectric current through the wire and cause it to light up, revealing the image on the other plate. This sight was used by British troops during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1836, James Baily invented what is now known as a Red dot sight. This Sight utilized three small mirrors to reflect light back onto an accurateaxis on a screen behind the user. This invention allowed soldiers to aim their guns with greater accuracy than ever before. In 1895, George Stephenson developed and patented his improvements to firearms sights called Stephenson's Dummy Gunsight (SDG). These sights utilized two circles that moved along an axis perpendicular to each other and focused sunlight onto an objective lens nearsighted or nearsightedness could be corrected with glasses worn inside a spectacles case. The SDG allowed soldiers to fire projectiles with greater accuracy than ever before due to its increased range and clarity of vision

In 1795, John Brown patented his first rifle bipod design which allowed users to aim their rifles using a tripod instead of having them rest on their shoulders. From then until 1814, all rifles used some form of bipod attachment
Tamarac, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. The name is derived from the Seminole word "tamaracco", meaning "place where the palm trees grow". Tamarac was founded in 1892 by men who were seeking to settle a tract of land that had been purchased by Major Edwin M. Stanton from Seminoles in 1868. The community grew around a post office and two stores operated there until 1915 when the post office was closed due to lack of mail volume. In 1916, an agricultural cooperative was formed and began raising wheat and other crops; but it closed five years later because of financial difficulties.Tamarac first came into existence as a village on November 6, 1912 when settlers organized themselves into two companies to purchase 640 acres (2 km²) of land near present-day Kissimmee for $1 per acre ($25 at current prices). On December 3, 1913, the first schoolhouse opened in Tamarac with instruction being given by Mrs. Sallie Sellers.[4] At its peak during World War I (1914-1918), Tamarac had about 150 residents; but although it served as an important military base for training troops during World War I, much economic activity took place outside of town because so few people lived there After 1918,[5] tamarac declined gradually over time due to lack of business opportunity and population loss caused by various factors such as annexation of other towns within Polk County,[6][7] automobile manufacturing plant opening nearby in 1927[8] and other changes taking place within Polk County during that period which resulted in less need for farming labor.[9][10][11][12]In 1954,[13][14] after many years without any new development taking place within TAMARAC limits,[15] developer Glynn Sowers moved his citrus farm 5 miles (8 km) eastward along US Highway 441 from his original location on Orange Blossom Trail Road to what is now known as Old Town Tamarac which he renamed after himself – Glynn's Landing – following his purchase of some 160 acres (57 hectares) adjacent to Tamarac proper including 10± acres (40± hectares) located between US Highways 441/441E & 4417/4417W just west of today's Main Street intersection).[16][17]:p367 As more businesses moved away from downtown TAMARAC over time,[18]:p373 this rural aspect continued to decline until 1991 when Douglas Waddell redeveloped Old TownTamarAC into one large commercial district featuring numerous restaurants and markets plus several thousand residential units[19]:p379 With its resurgence starting in 2007[20], Old Town has seen redevelopment again including new retail space and additional housing developments
