The town of Tamarac was founded by settlers John and Martha Coolidge on November 3, 1836 as a result of the Seminole Wars. The Coolidges named their farm "Tamarac" after the small Malaysian island they had just landed on while traveling through Central America in 1835. In December 1861, Confederate General Braxton Bragg made an agreement with Governor Andrew Johnson to allow Confederate soldiers from Tallahassee to march into central Florida for supplies and reinforcements before heading north towards Tampa Bay. As part of this agreement, Captain James Macon (a Confederate soldier) agreed to provide feed for up to 50 cavalry troopers at no cost to Johnson's government. On October 6, 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived in Tampa Bay with over 60 thousand troops and ordered all Confederate troops eastward along the coastlines of Georgia and Alabama into surrendered territory. Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer reached Tamarac on October 11 after leading five hundred cavalrymen bloodily suppressing a pro-Union rally at Fort Buchanan on Indian Key Island near St Petersburg Beach. Commodore David Farragut (commanding USS Ramage) sighted Custer's force off Cape Canaveral early that morning on October 12 and quickly dispatched his flagship USS Monitor (1841), which closed range behind him despite being two miles away (), ordering Acting Commodore Thomas Henschel () to leave his blockade runners clear passage through without being fired upon (). With only one remaining ship between them and California (), Commodore Farragut decided not pursue the stranded battlefleet but instead sailed back home empty-handed (). A few weeks later Commodore Farragut learned that General Sherman's army had arrived in Mobile Bay and destroyed all evidence of Custer's event so there would be no way historians could link him with any military action during the war
