Tamarac is a town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,516 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola-Fnton–Stuart Combined Statistical Area. The town began as a Seminole village and was named after the Tamarack tree found there. The first white settlers arrived in 1821 and soon founded a gristmill and store. In 1827, they built their first school. By 1830, they had developed into a small town with three stores, two gristmills, and one schoolhouse. However, by 1830 only about 60 people lived in the town; most of them were Indians who had been brought to Florida as slaves but had since freed themselves. They continued to live there until 1861 when Escambia County was created from what was then Spanish Mobile Bayou Territory. In 1866 the US government created Indian Territory including all of modern Escambia County except for Toccoa which became part of Seminole Territory (the area now known as Jacksonville).In 1870 Toccoa merged with nearby Oraland to form Oraland Townships which included Tamarac for all residents of both townships regardless of whether they were Native American or not The first post office opened in Tamarac on October 6th, 1884 under the name Punta Gorda east side of US Highway 98 near baseball stadium which later became Pennington Middle School during prohibition era In 1951 Tamarac incorporated as a municipality under state statute Number 948 Tamarac saw its heyday around 1960s through 1970s when many businesses came online such as banks that grew out of local video terminals used by locals for conducting transactions like mortgages and other banking services However by 1980s TAMARAC reached an all time low with few businesses remaining open along with high crime rates due to drugs being smuggled into this rural community from Mexico
