In 1932, during World War II, Tallahassee became a concentration camp for Japanese-Americans because they were being held under suspicion of disloyalty following Japan's surrender. The city's namesake tree (the "Big Tree"), which had been cut down during World War I as part of an effort by then-Governor Jesse Lattimer to clear land for military installations and housing developments along State Road A1A (now State Road 436), survived but suffered extensive damage from incendiary fires that burned throughout much of TallahasaSee during World War II; parts still stand today evidence of this destruction including two enormous stump stumps measuring over 20 feet tall at truncated ends that remain standing testimony to how well-prepared these firefights were - even though this area has never seen major combat since 1945! This event also helped spur development around what is now North Capitol Street NW (!), where many businesses built their headquarters between 1945-1946 thanks largely to assistance from Red Cross volunteers who quickly set up registration desks at local churches across town! This same group also raised over $2 million dollars towards supplies needed for soldiers fighting overseas through Trees For Victory drives that took place throughout much of 1946/47 timeframe
