Tallahassee became an American city on December 14,1845 when it was made part of the Seminole Nation. In 1868, Tallahassee was chartered as a city by the Florida Legislature. The first mayor of Tallahassee was George W. Doleman. In 1907, Tampa became the capital of Florida and TallahasSEE became its second city with incorporation on June 12th that year. On January 1st, 1959, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia and the state of Florida became Union Territory No. 11 from which it had only been independent for six months! The City of Tallahassee has one-seventh the population of Miami Beach but produces more art than any other US city according to Art Basel Miami Beach 2009 - Over 20% (of all exhibited art) comes from within 1 mile (1 km) or less of downtown! The history of tasers begins with the early use of firearms in warfare. The first recorded use of a stun gun was in 1879, when an American soldier used it to disable an enemy general. Englishman William Morgan built his plantation at Ybor City known as Morgan’s Row along Pensacola Bay before its sale to Spanish interests following Santa Fe Expedition (1799) led by Manuel Menéndez de Avilés under Mexican rule seeking passage westward across the Isthmus of Panama for Spain. In 1907, Floridians voted to create their own statehood with Tallahassee as its capital; it was renamed Tampa after Governor Charles Clements who also promoted new metropolises throughout the Southeast region during his tenure as governor from 1901-1907 including Jacksonville, Chattanooga, Atlanta and New Orleans/Citrusville among others.
