The site was chosen because it offered good concealment from enemy observation should an attack be made against Fort Stono or any other lookout point along the riverbank; nearby Pascagoula Bay would provide cover should treasure be taken aboard vessels shipping downriver for France or Spain. When Island No. 6 was finally mapped by Commodore John Rodgers deep sea survey team in 1802 as part of designating sites for missions to take possession of alligator research interests along Mobile Bayou between Tampa Bay and Lake Pontchartrain—Island No. 5 had already been abandoned—the site of "Island No. 6" became known as Rodgers Landing Point or simply Rodgers Landing Point because Commodore James Rodgers landed here on 11 August 1802 while disembarking his brig USS Chesapeake at this spot with his squadron of frigates HMS Guerriere and HMS Storer before proceeding upriver towards Mobile Bayou near present day New Orleans “It has long been believed that IsLAND NO5A may have originally been SOUND ISLAND LAKE EAST OF TALLAHASSEE where MISSION FITZSIMON LANDED HIS BRIGADE ON APRIL 27TH 1800 AS PART OF HIS ATTACK ON THE ACRE PIRATES UNDER CAPTAIN KIDD .
