After years of construction and fights with Seminoles that left more than 100 dead,[3][4] Fort Hudson was abandoned circa 1840 following opinion within US military circles that it would be less effective defending Pensacola against Seminole attack than bothering with an original fortification erected at Key West which had been destroyed by a hurricane two years earlier[5].
