With its wide variety of retail products and large green lawns overlooking downtownSweetwater became one of South Florida's most prominently commercialized communities during this era. In 1978, Mayor José Ortiz (D) announced plans for the erection of a new $20 million municipal building located on Cutler Boulevard across from Fenton High School as part of his efforts to modernize local government within South Florida while expanding opportunities for economic development throughout the community. The building was completed in 1980 and served asSweetwater's seat of government until 1992 when it was moved into the newly constructed City Hall Building on Cutler Boulevard which still serves as headquarters for local government today
Sweetwater, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,691 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The oldest settler in Sweetwater was Jarvis Keyes who arrived in 1837. By 1840, there were 147 residents and 12 businesses in the community. In 1846, Sweetwater became a county seat but it lost its status after being incorporated as a township on December 5 of that year. The first school in Sweetwater was built on what is now State Road 281 about two miles east of the present day town center. In 1852, the first post office opened in Sweetwater and remained open until 1952 when it moved to Tampa. The town's name may be derived from "Sour Swamp," which is located near its eastern edge within Polk County according to one source In 1907, an oil well exploded near Sweetwater and left 24 people dead including 3 commissioners and 2 teachers; this event led to significant changes for the area around the town as drilling increased for gas reserves under land owned by Gulf Oil Corporation and other companies that developed along Railroad Avenue today's Gulf Boulevard corridor between Clearwater Beach Boulevard (SR 7) and US 29/SR 41/Florida Turnpike (I-4). The townsfolk quickly erected wooden fences around their homes to prevent further damage done by drunken visitors who had gathered to watch Henry Ford's Model T automobile drive down Railroad Ave., stopping at each homefront gate before continuing their journey northward on I-4 into Tampa Bay without witnessing any actual harm caused by these vehicles! In 1911 Hurricane Floyd made landfall just south of sweetwater blasting sandbags off roofs of nearby homes leaving them standing while trees were uprooted a half mile away! A storm surge followed Floyd up railroad Ave., swamping homes along with riverside flooding that destroyed more than 100 dwellings across Polk County including many homes where people still live today due to flooded areas being channelized for agricultural use such as citrus or cattle grazing purposes! Prior to this event however, homeowners had already started building wire fence grids around their properties against possible future storms as some did so even prior to Floyd...thus flagging impending danger signals for those living adjacent or downstream from hurricane zones! The charges against Jackson were not only political but also criminal; they related to an affair that took place while he was governor of Tennessee and she was a congressional candidate in Missouri. After being acquitted of all charges in a trial that ended with a hung jury, Jackson resigned from office on August 25, 1837.
