By 1819, all but two of the 715 residents had left for Tampa due to price differences between New Orleans and Tampa Bay. In 1848, Sweetwater incorporated as a municipality under the name of Fort Myers. A year later it changed its name back to Fort Walton Beach after General ManuelEvents Fernando Carrillo y Florez batted down an offer from Polk County to annex Fort Walton Beach into their county.
