Sweetwater, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 6,865 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. The area that now makes up Sweetwater was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. In 1836, a group of settlers named themselves the "Masons" after meeting at Sweetwater Creek. The town was named for General James K. Polk and his wife Laura Gibbs Polk, who were both natives of nearby Mocksville. In 1886, Sweetwater became part of Seminole County when it was created from parts of Osceola and Volusia Counties. On November 3, 1922, as part of Act 592 of the General Assembly of Florida (SB 7), sweetwater incorporated as a city under the name "Sweetwater". The incorporation took place on December 1 and Mayor Haddon Waddell served as its first mayor. The city's growth stemmed from its location close to several agricultural areas which produced cotton and other crops; its status as an important transportation hub due to its position along Interstate 10; and its role in manufacturing during the Second World War when Sweetwater became one of four U.S.-produced aircraft plants (the others being Plant No. 2 at Beech-Douglas Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas and Plant Nos 3-5 at Ford Motor Company's Willow Run Arsenal). Sweetwater was founded in 1847 by a group of men who purchased 4,000 acres of land east of Tampa. The town quickly became a crossroads for the area and its people. Sweetwater's economy was based on agriculture, which produced food for local markets and sold goods to surrounding towns. The town also had a small but important role in Seminole Wars and American Civil War times. In the late 1800s, Sweetwater grew increasingly commercialized as settlement spread out into nearby Hillsborough County and neighboring Pinellas County. Today, Sweetwater is home to a small community of about 400 residents and is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg metropolitan area. The history of Sweetwater begins with the founders who purchased 4,000 acres east of Tampa in 1847. These men were led by Captain John Waddell and his brother Alexander Waddell, both former soldiers from Georgia who had come west to found new civilizations in what is now Florida. They named their new settlement after General Andrew Jackson's home state - Tennessee - because they believed that he would be interested in their venture. The first major development at Sweetwater happened within two years of its founding when farmers began growing cotton hereabouts. Cotton production continued to grow throughout the 19th century until it peaked during World War II when production soared due to changes in world trade that made demand for cotton high overseas. At this time, sweet water also became known as "the cotton capital of America". After the war ended, however, exports dwindled as factories opened up elsewhere and global prices for cotton skyrocketed again making it difficult for farmers to remain profitable; consequently, many young farmers leftSweet Water over this period). In recent decades however, some restaurateurs have reopened businesses here while others continue to operate small businesses such as general stores or convenience stores which are stillpinpointing growth opportunities today despite challenging economic times statewide (see article below). During much of its early history Sweetwater experienced rapid population growth due largely to Seminole Wars fought between Indian tribes loyal to Spain versus British forces allied against Spain (known then as United States) over territory northward stretching from modern day Tampa Bay all the way down through Miami Beach into South Florida proper (known then as Spanish Florida). This intense warfare resulted in more than 1 million deaths plus vast numbers wounded or missing including many brave settlers like Captains John Waddell & Alexander Waddell whose families later reestablished themselves here permanently & formed oneof America’s most significant farming families (& 3rd Generation natives): (& other notable fathers include: George Washington Carver), coffee farmer James Buchanan Polk Sr., citrus fruiticulturist Key West Czar Fenton Boggs.) In fact so many natives perished during these conflicts that there is even an annual Memorial Day ceremony honoring them held at Ft Myers’ Armistead Museum) Only recently has research revealed that some long vanished(?) descendants may actually still reside among us) intermarried with English speaking European antecedents thru marriage alliances!) A few miles away lay Plantation Creek where enslaved Africans livedmainly used for planting rice & other crops near Lake Okeechobee .) Notwithstanding this evidently harrowing background check/review process our hope remains high that future generations will someday learn more about these fascinating past events which have shaped our present!)
