The city was founded by Sallie and John Sweet on October 22, 1882. The original town site was located about southeast of present-day Sweetwater on a so-called "hollow" in the Baldwin Hills. On November 7th of that year, voters approved incorporation into Polk County and Sweetwater became its official name. Most recently, the city has seen significant growth due to construction projects such as Interstate 495 which connect the city with nearby Jacksonville (to the north) and Pensacola (to the south). Additionally, new businesses have been opened up in downtown including a new grocery store called Urban Outfitters which opened in 2007; two restaurants - Joe's Pizza which opened in 2009 after years of renovation; Levy's Marina & Watersports Complex - which includes a marina with docks for boat rentals/starters; as well as numerous other retail establishments collectively totaling more than 275 acres (120 hectares). Developer Larry Silverstein purchased land adjacent to downtown from state government for use as an office park during Hurricane Irma although no buildings have been erected yet.; however many are anticipate that this project will commence soon given Silverstein's past track record when it comes to revising plans quickly following disasters

Sweetwater is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,636 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first Europeans to come to Sweetwater were French Catholic missionaries in 1763 who built a mission and chapel on the banks of the St Johns River. In 1821, American General Andrew Jackson founded a base camp here for his army's march on Tampa Bay. After he was elected President in 1828, he visited Sweetwater and ordered all military supplies brought into the town for storage at Fort Union before embarking southward on his campaign against Seminole Indians. In 1849, a group of men from Cold Spring Harbor Village established a small farm near what is now downtown Sweetwater with help from brothers John A. and James Tilton Sr.. They named their farm "Tilton." When they died in 1865, their land passed to their son James Tilton Jr., who developed it into one of Florida's most wealthy landowners. During World War II (1941-1945), Sweetwater became an important naval training site due to its location between Jacksonville and Miami Beach
Sweetwater was founded in 1824 by Captain John Sweet and his partner, Richard Barrett. The community of Sweetwater was located near the present day town of Sweetwater, Florida. In 1830, Captain John Sweet married Rebecca Key. They had six children: James, John, Rebecca, Sarah (born 1832), Andrew (born 1834), Louisa (born 1836) and Elijah (born 1840). The family moved to Valdosta County in 1846 when James became Governor of Georgia. The family remained there until their deaths in 1893 and 1899. In 1863 the Union army attacked Sweetwater while it was under Confederate occupation; only a few people were killed but many homes were destroyed. In 1865 General Sherman's army burned all the homes except one which still stands today as a museum specimen. The first post office at Sweetwater opened on July 1, 1826. It was renamed Valdosta on October 14th of that year due to the fact that it became an incorporated city with this name on November 7th of that year. On October 3rd of 1870 the post office moved from Valdosta to its present location south of I-75 just east of Gainesville where it has been serving ever since. On May 6th, 1903 a tornado touched down near Valdosta and completely destroyed most buildings within five miles includingSweetwater's three churches which sustained severe damage as well as many other dwellings and stores making what is now known as "the Great Valdosta Tornado". For over seventy years after this event sweet water has had its own tornado warning system operated by National Weather Service Headquarters based out of Tallahassee
