At the turn of the century, Sweetwater had a small population and few businesses. However, in 1907 a man named Harry S. Kapp started a grocery store on Main Street. By 1912, Sweetwater had two churches and one post office. In 1913, the first school was built on Union Avenue. The town's first fire department was established in 1915. By 1920, Sweetwater had six banks, twenty-four businesses, and three schools. The population increased to 1,500 by 1930 and reached 2,000 by 1940. In 1951, Kapp donated land for the town's first park which is now called Harry S.' Park.
Sweetwater, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sweetwater was founded in 1882 by George W. Pease and James Lyle as a post office and cotton gin on the edge of the present-day city of Gainesville. The first business in Sweetwater was a grocery store run by J.H. Sharer and his son John Hargrave from 1883 until 1886 when they moved to Tallahassee to open a hardware store and later became grocery men themselves. In 1889, Richard Tipton opened a sawmill on White Oak River which helped to start the town's heavy industry; this included tannery, papermaking, printing press production, timber production and potato farming until about 1930 when all these activities were abandoned due to competition from new industries such as agriculture or tourism (the sawmill still stands today). In 1906 Sweetwater incorporated as a village under the name of "Emmett" with Auren Gentry as its first mayor (later changed to Sweetwater). The village had no school until 1912 when it opened one under contract with Stroud School District #2 thereby providing education for all citizens without tuition Fees or other charges associated with private schools at that time. On October 2nd 1911 Mayor Gentry requested unanimous consent from all members of the Village Council to erect an addition to City Hall Buildings known then as "The Annex" - now known as City Hall Annex Building - for use by Village Council meetings pursuant thereto duly authorized by resolution passed at their meeting held on October 17th 1910 . In 1935 elected officials began holding monthly elections for Village President/Mayor instead of annually like those taking place within most villages then existing throughout Florida; this change was approved at a specialVillage Election held December 5th 1935 after recommendation from an investigating commission appointed pursuant thereto composed of Messrs Vernon Mclntyre (President) Fenton Key (First Vice President), Jethro Sells (Second Vice President), Auren Gentry (Third Vice President), Harry Weisman(Secretary)and myself .... At that time our current Mayor Al Golden had been serving since November 1934 .... Thereafter every six months our current Mayor Al Golden holds an election regardless of whether he is reelected because we want him term limited so he can't become re-elected more than once .... Voting takes place during regular sessions only just prior to adjournment so members can get together before trying again in another six months ......
