Sweetwater is a town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,059 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Fargo, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Sweetwater were Captain John Smith and his crew on HMS "Endeavor" on October 16, 1779. They landed on a small island in the Gulf of Mexico about south of what is now Sweetwater. In 1836, Collector A. P. Hill named the island after General James A. Grant's division of Ulysses S. Grant's army that had been destroyed at Burntwood more than two years earlier near Gainesville by Seminole Indians led by Osceola County Sheriff Sam Jones In 1840s and 1850s some settlers were attracted to the prospect of rich coal deposits in nearby Black Mesa and founded two towns called Fort Myers and Stonington (now part of Miami). However, these towns failed because they depended too much on agriculture for their income while also being several miles from any major city or port; so when railroads arrived in the area during the late 19th century they quickly became an important factor in driving development forward In 1859 a group led by Hernando Bousquet purchased land southeast of present-day Sweetwater which he divided into three tracts: one including what is now downtown Sweetwater; one extending to today's north side of Interstate 10 east of I-10 Business Loop; and one lying west along US Highway 98 between US Highway 1A (now US 95) and I-10 Business Loop On July 4, 1861 Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston ordered his cavalry under First Lt John Cushing to cross over from Alabama into Pensacola Bayou where they committed suicide rather than surrender On December 12th 1865 General Johnston's forces abandoned their siege at Pensacola Bayou as Union forces began moving inland . Became known as "The Marching Mules". Post office opened February 15th 1870 . Sweetwater was incorporated as a village on November 15th 1870 . By 1880 it had grown sufficiently to become its own municipal government with four streets - Main Street NW., Second Avenue SW., Third Avenue SE., undivided North Boulevard NE.; however this same year it merged with neighboring Stonington to form what is now Pensacilla–Fargo metropolitan statistical area

Sweetwater is a city in Alachua County, Florida, United States. The population was 24,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Alachua County. Sweetwater is known for its production of sweet water (H2O) and its tourist attractions, including the "Butterfly Effect" attraction that makes visitors experience replica butterflies flying through the air as they walk through town square. The first permanent settler in Sweetwater was James Cook in 1821. Cook named his new land after Mount Vernon in Virginia, which he had seen from his ship on navigation patrol off the Florida coast two years earlier. The first store opened in 1828 and by 1830 there were five stores operating within Sweetwater limits. A post office was established at Sweetwater on December 12, 1833; it continued to serve until 1907 when it moved to Gainesville.[1] In 1854 interest began to grow among settlers for a salt lick on what is now downtown Sweetwater where salt works could be located with access to Gulf of Mexico water for irrigation purposes. Daniel Ketchum organized a company with others interested in starting a salt industry and purchased 640 acres near present-day downtown from Captain JF Fuller of Jacksonville on November 8, 1866; this tract became known as Ketchum's Landing.[2] By 1870 both Ketchum's Landing and Gainesville had become large farming communities with one store each;[3][4] however sweet water production remained localized until 1893 when Wm Hargrave bought 1,400 acres (500 km²) east of Gainesville from Captains Elisha Brougham and John Crainette for $5 per acre ($140 million adjusted value).[5][6][7] This area became known as Hargrave Field because Hargrave developed one or more sugar cane plantations thereon;[8][9] since most sweet water comes from these plantations it has been called "Hargraves' Water". In 1912 an electric plant was added to Hargrave Field making it the first all electric plantation in Florida,[10] although production ceased about fifteen years later during World War I due to lack of fuel prices.[11][12][13] From 1915 until 1933Sweetwater had two newspapers: The Daily Democrat and The Sentinel;[14][15][16] following World War II they merged into one paper called The Tribune which continued publication until 1992 before folding into Hearst Newspapers.[17]. However some aspects of daily life such as church services still take placeiants weekdays morning even though many papers are no longer published that way today:[18]; however community spirit remains strong with annual events like 3-day festival celebrating local food source called "FestivalFest".[19]- [20]= According to the 2006 US Census,[21]:24,752 people lived insideSweetwater City Limits while another 2,882 people lived outside them according to 2000 US Census data. As reported by Politico Magazine: "the largest concentrations tend towards older white residents who have owned their homes here since before annexation went out to bid on those properties", while black residents make up only 11% of total citizens but account for more than 50% percent of homeownership rates and 50% percent payroll jobs available inside city limits--nearly three quarters (72%) earning over $75K annually." Hispanic/Latino residents make up 10%of total citizens but account for nearly half (45%)of homeownership rates within city limits."[22]: According to recent figures provided by Mayor Bob Buckhorn’s office released Septembre 15th thru Octobre 5th 2017,[23]:There were 20 businesses employing over 100 employees within city limits priorto Hurricane Irma landfalling last September—their number increased rapidly following Category 4 storm surge damage inflicted upon what used to be a thriving commercial center—but since then property values have plummeted reaching historic lows (−$27M CASH VALUE IN 2016 versus pre-Irma levels), paralleling Ybor City’s overall trend."[24]: Furthermore Forbes reports that "A report issued late last year by Polk County commissioners found thatSweetWater lost almost 60 percent of its population between 2000 and 2016 due largelyto losssof manufacturing jobs associated withdrink processing plantsand other areas around town".[25]: Finally according totitled October 17th 2017 report preparedby Citizens Against Illegal Immigration – Inc., "sweet water tour operators earn less than minimum wage throughout Keyshawn BeachCounty", conductedsurveyors visited thirty businesses within citylimits surrounding Key West whorerendering incomes rangingfrom just $7-$14/hour (+/-50%); not only do these businesses suffer direct economic blowsafter Irma but also losses incurred due tounrelated vehicle accidents (-$30K); drink driving arrests (-$225K); prostitution arrests (-$100K)", resultingin "$41M loss since tourism sector accounts for almost 20% ($60B)ofthe countywide economy", an indicationthatwithout job growthlocal families are struggling financially amidst increasing market rentsubsidies are becoming increasingly difficult(if not impossible)to keep up with rising costs: thus underscoring how important it isforoothornetworkandfunding mechanismstothebridgecoastregion
Sweetwater is a town in Alachua County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,451 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville-Lakeland,Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Sweetwater were two brothers from Spain on March 10, 1565: Juan Ponce de León and Miguel López de Legazpi. They named their new location "San Marcos" after St. Marcos of Avila who had been converted to Christianity by Saint Francis Xavier in 1541. The name stuck and the town acquired its current name of Sweetwater on October 2, 1838 when a group of settlers from Georgia arrived in boat and discovered sugarcane growing near the river's mouth. In 1859, Colonel James Larkin built a Millinery School in Sweetwater which became an important center for local retail sales until it closed in 1971. In 1898, Drury’s Store opened with eight floors and seating for 400 customers upstairs and 100 people downstairs inside a two-story frame building that still stands today next to Highway 92 south of downtown Sweetwater.. In 1912 there was also another store called Joplin’sStore which burned down soon after opening
