By 1925, JCPenney had become one of America's largest retail corporations with more than 2,000 stores nationwide and operations throughout Latin America In 1958–1959 Mapleton Homes (a development corporation controlled by developer Milton Weisman) built what is now Interstate 441 south of town on a tract of land owned by Tatum & Gorman which they resold to developers Harry Blackstone (of Blackstone Properties) and Lew Alcantara (of Alcantara Development). Sweetwater is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–St. Augustine Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to sight and name Sweetwater were Spanish explorers who sailed up the Gulf Coast in 1796 during their exploration of Florida. They named it Puerto de la Hacha after one of their ships that had been wrecked on the coast about thirty miles east of Sweetwater. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded Florida and burned all but two settlements along the Gulf Coast from Pensacola to Stonington (now Tallahassee). One Indian village still stands - called "Cacique" by early Spaniards - near present-day Fort Myers off U.S. Route 41A south of Interstate 10. Aftermath of the Invasion caused many choices for naming places where American troops stopped or burned - some proposals included Santa Rosa de la Bahia (today's Tampa), San Miguel de Allende (now Corpus Christi), Key Largo, Coárden (Ocala) and Bahía Blanca (Boca Raton). Captain John Stennis landed on Pensacola Bay on December 13, 1813 and anchored his ship "Nereus" beside what is now known as Fort George Island in order to survey navigation conditions for potential Treasure Cruise expeditions led by President James K., Polk in 1814-15 seeking natural resources such as oil refineries along Apalachicola Bayou north of Jacksonville and within sight of Spanish/American lands between Cape Canaveral County to the east and Hendry County to the west which lay under American control until 1898 when Spain ceded it back to America following its victory in war with France over Cuba—the last time any European country exercised sovereignty over Cuba! Sweetwater was founded in 1823 by J.D. Sweet, a Tennesseean who had come to Florida as a trader. The town served as the primary trading center for the area until it was destroyed by a storm in 1846. A new settlement, Port St. Joe, was established at the mouth of the Intracoastal Waterway and became the commercial center of Sweetwater County. The first post office in Sweetwater County was established in 1827, and mail from other parts of Florida arrived here soon after. One of the most important industries in Sweetwater County was fishing; many residents engaged in this activity during its early years. The local milling and mining communities also developed during this time period, especially around mile marker 167 on State Road 95W which runs along the coast from sweetwater to Stuartville. In 1868, a group of businessmen purchased land east of Port St. Joe and began developing what would become Tampa Bay into an agricultural society with large cotton plantations as its centerpiece. This region became known as "the Cotton Belt." In 1902, Sweetwater County merged with Hillsborough County to form Hillsborough Regional School District No 775 (now Pinellas-Hillsborough Schools). In 1922, following passage of National Prohibition Act (USTA),Sweetwater county voted to become an unincorporated dry county within Hillsborough Regional School District No 775 effective January 1st 1923 only due to lack of available revenue sources for social services required by prohibition laws mandate
