In the early 1900s, Sweetwater was a small town in Polk County, Florida. It was home to a few thousand people and had no firearms of its own. However, it did have access to guns rented from nearby towns. In 1907, the Polk County sheriff purchased two shotguns from A.W. Brown & Sons in Cincinnati, Ohio for use by his deputies. The following year, sheriff's deputies in Sweetwater were using borrowed shotguns when they were shot at by gunmen who barricaded themselves inside a train station on the town's outskirts. The deputy sheriffs managed to shoot back and kill the attackers. After their shooting incident, Sheriff Leland Hise decided that having his own gun would be more secure and ordered all of his deputies to buy weaponized shotguns within three months. In 1912, an amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified which allowed Americans with military experience or training to purchase and carry firearms without having their licenses revoked or being fingerprinted. This new law madeSweetwater one of the first places in America where handguns could be lawfully bought and used without fear of government retribution or prosecution

Sweetwater is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town was founded on December 12, 1881 by J. H. Sweet and his wife Anna Maria Sweet as a station on the Gulf Railroad between Jacksonville and St. Augustine. The name "Sweetwater" is thought to be derived from Anna Maria's maiden name of "Sweets". On October 15, 1902, the station was renamed for General Philip Sheridan by US Senator John Denton after Sheridan's visit to Florida that year to inspect military forces then stationed in that state during World War I. On November 5, 1901, General Walter Pendergrin arrived at Sweetwater with his brigade of Confederate veterans and set up camp there until he could find more permanent headquarters elsewhere in Florida or Georgia. On July 16 1907 an agreement was made between the United States War Department and Polk County commissioners whereby General Walter Pendergrin would become sheriff of county while also providing law enforcement services for a period of five years beginning January 1st 1908; this agreement became effective upon ratification by both parties by referendum held two days later at a meeting called for that purpose in the public square within walking distance of courthouse). In 1916-1917 sweet water served as staging ground for Ulysses S Grant's aborted attempt to cross over into Mexico on horseback through Texas under what became known as “the Mexican crossing” scuffle which ended with Grant being shot dead near Sweetwater Creek Bridge near present day Clay Road east of town limits on October 17th 1916 (a few miles south west of where Uniontown now stands), following which alledgedly Grant's bodyguards rode their horses across Reynolds Mill Dam into adjacent unincorporated territory controlled by Mexico before finally reaching Station Ford some ten miles south west of town limits - more likely Equestrian Park where it remaindered until 1946 when itamely reverted back under U.S jurisdiction due to its location within Mexican territorial borders).
