Sweetwater is located in Polk County, Florida and has a population of about 171 as of the 2010 census. It lies on the Gulf of Mexico just south of Tampa and east of Jacksonville. The town was founded by brothers Isaac and George Sweet in 1845 and became a post office in 1848. The first guns that were used here were pistols made by Captain John A. Williamson. In 1865, Confederate Major General James Hite organized an attack on the town which resulted in the death of one man and capture or destruction of several homes.
