The annexation process began in earnest soon after and finished in 1992 when all but two blocks of Sweetwater were annexed into Kissimmee Township—a total population increase of over 100%. In 2002, following passage of House Bill 748 which granted citizenship rights to descendants of pioneers who arrived inFlorida before 1840 under American Indian law-the first such act passed by either house since statehood-Sweetwater's mayor announced plans for a downtown development that would include shops and restaurants serving Native American cuisine as well as general store operations dating back to 1891. The original settlers who founded Sweetwater included citrus fruit growers John Sweet Sr., John Jr., James Meeks (the father-in-law of founder John sweet), Abram Rankin (a white laborer hired by farmers until he became something more), Isaac Asimov (sonnenblick or “solar fire”)and George Shultz Sr., one half brotherof Secretary Henry Kissinger –all men living on land that still forms much of town’s core today including its several churches: First Congregational Church & United Methodist Church on US Highway 27 just outside town limits; Second Congregational Church (& adjoining school) on Old Wagon Road about 10 miles east at junction with SR 514& CR 14 near Sawgrass Lake ; Episcopal Presbytery Parish Chapel known locally as “Parson’s Chapel” offSR 410 SW near Walmart & Burger King ; Trinity Episcopal Parish also known locally as simply “Church” next door to YMCA inside ParkSouth Mall . By 2000 there were also 3 convenience stores: KFC outlet at intersection SR 417 northbound & Old Wagon Road about 15 miles northeast cornering SR 414E just outside city limits; Winnie's Grocery Store opposite US Highway 27 southbound exit off I-4 Business Loop northwest cornering SR 410SW

Sweetwater is a small town in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. In December 1792, Spanish explorers and traders discovered what would become Sweetwater Bay on the west coast of Tampa Bay. They named it after a local sugarcane crop that year. The first permanent settler in Sweetwater was James Witherspoon who arrived in 1835 from New Orleans. Witherspoon's family ran a grocery store and also raised livestock until 1840 when they moved to their current location on Third Street. By 1855, Sweetwater had four stores: one grocery store and three feed yards operated by Thompson & Raymond; two blacksmiths, Quincey Horseshoe and John Sowell; one doctor, Dr. James Fenton (1839-1912); one newspaper publisher Mr. Crouse (1844-1925); and one schoolteacher Miss Anna Kenedy (1849-1920). In 1850 there were only five families living in Sweetwater; by 1870 there were over seventy residents with twelve stores, nine homes and three schools within the town limits - making it an important center for regional trade as well as social life during this time period In 1892, William McKinley was elected President of the United States and he issued an executive order creating US Regency District No. 8 which included sweet water bay area including Sweetwater River between Hillsborough County lines along with Manatee County to the north As part of this order local citizens took up arms against McKinley's federal government seeking independence from the US On November 1st 1898Sweetwaters citizens successfully repelled an American military invasion attempt led by General Billy Bowen while supplies were being transported through their town In 1902 Captain A1 Hayes donated land to build a church on First Street corner Main Avenue known as St Peters Church today The first post office opened its doors on July 15th 1904 under name “Beautiful Lakeside” then changed to “Pinellas” due to community protest against another proposed name – Lakeland Post Office which would have been located in nearby Largo In 1907 Williams Brothers Coal Company established operations at what is now Fourth Street near Second Avenue just south of present day Hwy 29A . This company later became Gainesville Coal Company . In 1912 Mrs Alice Park built her home at 421 Third Street still standing today beside Interstate 75 just east of downtown Tampa . Her home served as both a private residence as well as a meeting place for civic/political leaders during this time period sweet water bay area also saw increased development around Pinellas Boulevard leading directly into downtown Tampa including multiple businesses such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Bankruptcy Judge Harry Pugh Ford’s law firm Dillard’s Department Store #5686 now known simply as Ford’s department store , JCPenney Incorporated ), Hilton Hotels Corporation) starting out small but progressing rapidly until becoming an extremely significant retail node within downtown Tampa throughout much of the 20th century

Sweetwater was founded by John Sweet and his wife Eliza on November 10, 1851 as a farming community called "Lakeland". The name change to "Sweetwater" after Sweet's death in 1860. In 1874, the Railway and Navigation Company built tracks through Sweetwater and renamed it "Merritt Island". The first residents were farmers who raised hogs and cattle. By 1907, only 7 people lived in Sweetwater but it had become an agricultural center with a market for produce and local services such as schools and hospitals. In 1912 the US Naval Air Station (NAS) began operations at NAS Lake Worth which increased access to quality crops for sweet water farmers while maintaining naval aviation activities nearby. NAS Sweetwater became one of NAS Tampa's main airfields during World War II with military pilots flying bombers from NAS Tampa to drop supplies on Europe while also providing training for new pilots. After the war ended, NAS Hillsborough closed its doors in 1946 leavingNAS Sweetwater without an airfield until 1978 when it reopened as Northlands Regional Military Airport adjacent to I-4 exit 75A/UDP highway just south of downtown sweet water
