Sweetwater is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,837 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first gun in Sweetwater was an old muzzleloader dating back to the 1800s that was used by the local farmers and ranchers. In 1892, a man named Wm. Hargrave built a small armory in Sweetwater and began manufacturing shotguns, rifles and pistols there. In 1949, Sweetwater's first handgun was registered with the National Firearms Act (NFA). That year also saw the opening of America's first Gunsmith Shop in Sweetwater with assistance from famed arms manufacturer Colt firearms Division. In 1975, local businessman Don Weibel opened his own Custom Arms store in Sweetwater after purchasing an existing firearms business located within walking distance of his home. Today Don Weibel's Guns & Ammo has become one of Florida's leading retailer of handguns and rifle ammunition as well as being one of the few remaining antique firearm dealers left in Smyrna Beach area outside Jacksonville proper!

On January 1, 1959, SweetWater Township annexed much of Hillsborough County including Plantation Beach which had been unincorporated since 1918 and had a population of 548 residents; this gave it a total population of 10,000 residents (9,999 withinSweetWater Township itself and 1 resident listed as “Not Applicable”). On January 1st 2009 SweetWater township accomplished another milestone when it amalgamated parts of Polk county including Plantation Beach into its municipality giving it 11K people living within its borders! This makes for one very active township that continues to grow! Sweetwater is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name "Sweetwater" comes from a mission established by Father Ponce de Leon in 1769 on the banks of the Peto River near what is now Sweetwater Island. The first settler in Sweetwater was Michael White and his family who arrived in 1836. In 1851, Captain John Sledge founded Sledge's Store here as a post office with the name "Sledge's Landing". Captain Sledge had been lost at sea while exploring Florida and decided to set up shop here to provide food for his men and sell goods he found on his travels. The store operated until 1901 when it burned down due to an arsonist. In 1892, John Davenport built Davenport's Mills here which became one of the leading flour mills in south Florida. The mill continued operations until 1957 when it closed because of competition from more efficient mills abroad. Today there are still remnants of Davenport’s Mills including a water tower and miller’s cottage that can be visited duringguided tours around town beginning March 9th each year! In 1896, Sweetwater organized itself as a village under the name of Fort Walton Beach (and later renamed Canaveral). At that time, it consisted only of two houses – located at 6031 NW 2nd Street and 12609 NW 3rd Street – but soon boasted dozens of buildings erected by local businessmen and farmers for various purposes such as stores, churches, schools, hospitals and other public works projects throughout its brief existence: brick warehouses (1896-1901), frame homes (1900-1902), agricultural fields (1901-1910), citrus orchards (1920-1950) . . . sweet water has never seen so much growth! This rapid expansion was largely due to two factors: First were advances in transportation provided by American Railroads; second were federally subsidized programs called " Agricultural Adjustment Act" which gave farmers access to price supports that made their crops more affordable for buyers outside OFA borders
Sweetwater was first settled in 1821 by Andrew Sweet, a settler from Virginia. In 1847, the town was platted and named for its natural watercourse, Sweetwater Creek. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s as settlers arrived from all over the United States. By 1910, Sweetwater had a population of about 200 people. The town's growth halted after World War I and subsequent economic decline led to its abandonment in the 1920s. In 1932, a group of local citizens restored Sweetwater as a small rural community with a population of around 10 people. Over time, the community has seen some growth but still functions primarily as an agricultural center. Today, it is home to a few businesses and two schools.
