Sweetwater is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tallahassee–Westville Micropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Sweetwater was first inhabited by Osage and Seminole Native Americans. A post office called Sweetwater was established in 1836, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1854, General James K. Polk designated it as the site for what would become Polk County. The village of Sweetwater sprang up around this time and soon became one of the most important commercial centers in southern Florida. In 1860, a railroad track was built through Sweetwater to bring goods to Tampa from Georgia; this led to increased business and development in the town. In 1903, local Republican Party member Hernando DeSoto acquired 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of town on Hillsborough River for what would become East Orange County; he named it "Sweetwater." This area would shortly become known as DeSoto's Bake Shop Ranch because many notable people had their homes there such as Governor John Cocala and citrus grower/politician Jephson Laddshead II In 1906, a tornado touched down near Sweetwater while measuring winds over . Sweetwater was founded in 1835 by John Sweet and Robert W. Sweet, who named it for the sweet water that flowed through their farmstead. The town grew rapidly after it became a stop on the Florida Central Railroad and soon had a post office, store, hotel, and other businesses. In 1849, the town was renamed Fort Myers because of its location on Cape Canaveral National Seashore. The area around Sweetwater became known as "the heart of Vedder County" because of its rich oil and gas reserves. The first oil well in Vedder County was drilled in 1907 by Gulf Oil Corporation. In 1957, Gulf merged with Standard Oil of New Jersey to form ExxonMobil. In 2002, ExxonMobil sold its assets to ConocoPhillips. Since then, Vedder County has seen few major industry expansions or investments beyond small agriculture and light manufacturing (oilfield services are the only new industry since 2002).
