In 1860, following Union victory over Confederate forces at First Battle of Bull Run (April 12), sweet potatoes became an important crop grown near where present day Interstate 95 crosses Stono Creek; this encouraged other farmers to move into Sweetwater and help support local trade with adjacent counties such as Monroe and Putnam Counties which became agricultural center around this time. The economy changed again during Reconstruction when many farms were taken over by military veterans returning to civilian life who used their new found wealth to purchase slaves for sale or cultivation; most notably Major General William Tecumseh Sherman's March through Georgia in 1865 destroyed most plantations throughout Southeast Alabama and Georgia freeing many thousands of slaves including those withinSweetwater limits In 1892 Mayor Wm Mckenzie organized a street car system which connected all downtown streets with one another making it possible for citizens to get goods they couldn't otherwise purchase from neighbors or merchants . A store was built here by James Cook in 1822 and remained in operation until 1915 when it burned down. The first school had been established here too but closed down due to lack of funding soon after opening its doors. A new school started up again about 1929 but went out of business within a few years due to economic difficulties not just in Sweetwater but throughout Monroe County during the Great Depression era. The last teacher taught here before moving away for good around 1938. One local legend has it that one day while class was being held at the old school building a tornado touched down nearby causing significant damage before quickly dissipating without leaving any fatalities or injuries! In 1925, Sheriff Hanks created an all-white sheriff's department which served all Monroe County including Sweetwater until 1931 when Negroes were finally allowed to hold elected office under state law following Reconstruction followed by World War II which ended segregation across America). After World War II came change with residents increasingly becoming more interested in farming and other rural activities than city life as jobs opened up outside of town (the population peaked at 1,971 during 1960 census). This change also led to increased development around town beginning with what is now known as downtown consisting primarily of retail businesses catering largely towards Out-of-towners who continued living and working outside of town even though housing prices began rising within commuting distance starting about 1965 although many people still stayed agricultural based economy despite increasing suburbanization (this trend accelerated over time)).
