A few years later, they built a trading post here which became known as "The Crossroads." The crossroads served as an important stop on travelers' way from Key West (where they bought sugar) down through West Palm Beach (to Monroe) then south through Jupiter before arriving at Tampa Bay where they unloaded their cargo on St Petersburg's wharf before continuing their journey home using either steamboats or sailing ships down the bayou route to Mobile Bay or points north stranded by cold winter weather conditions - all without cars! During its early years, Sweetwater endured some difficult times because there were no roads leading into it from elsewhere in Florida or from South America so goods had to be transported by boat or horseback across long distances! Sweetwater is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Fort Myers- Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Sweetwater was James A Biggs in 1823. At the time, Sweetwater was located on the western bank of the St Johns River and included present day Fort Myers and Clearwater. In 1829 Biggs established a post office here with mail service only from Tampa. In 1835 William Pritchard built a tollgate on US 82 east of present-day Sweetwater to collect money for goods transported through his land along this route. This canal system became known as "Pritchard's Canal". In 1886, Sweetwater incorporated as a town under state law No. 515; it had been organized as an unincorporated community by citizens James H Dickey and John McCurdy about two weeks prior to that date when both men met at home to create what would become their townsite. The incorporation caused some concern because it might lead to annexation by neighboring towns such as Fort Myers which had already erected their own municipal buildings and citizens! 1 year later in 1888 SweetWater lost its charter due to financial problems but regained it after flooding destroyed many of its civic buildings (including courthouse) in November 1889 . In 1893 Pritchard's Canal Company merged into Gulf Railroad company creating one of America’s great railroad empires – today known as CSX Transportation
