Sweetwater is a city in Florida, United States. It is the county seat of Brevard County. The population was 58,531 at the 2010 census. The name comes from "sweet" (a word meaning sugar) and "water" (the source of all water supply). Sweetwater first appeared on maps in 1784 when Spanish explorers discovered a small stream called Alachua River which ran through the present-day town. In 1821, Captain John Stonington named the stream Alachua after his father's home in England. The town of Sweetwater was founded on May 4, 1824 by James Kapp and others during the Seminole Wars as a trading post between Indian scouts and British fur traders. By 1830, Sweetwater had become an established agricultural center with plantations producing cotton, tobacco, sugar cane and other crops such as citrus fruit and potatoes. On December 16, 1840 – less than two months after Florida became a state – voters ratified a constitution that granted voting rights to African Americans. In 1863, Colonel William Troup built Fort Union at what is now mile marker 456 on the Jacksonville-Hollywood Expressway while Confederate forces were retreating from General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House south of Petersburg, Virginia. After Confederate forces withdrew from Florida in 1865 following the American Civil War., Fort Union served as an arms depot until it closed in 1886 due to overloading by military personnel for shipment back to Georgia Commanding General Ulysses S Grant's army traveling via Mobile Bay down Alabama's Mobile River route. In 1927–28 Hurricane Hazel destroyed most of downtown Sweetwater; only some frame buildings remained standing until they were replaced with new structures in 1955–57 by then Mayor Jerald Ritchie Sr.; who also reconstructed much of downtown’s infrastructure including street lights and public works projects such as replacement of sidewalks and gutters along Main Street between Trade Center Boulevard and Ridge Road; resurfacing of Ponce de Leon Boulevard east of Interstate 95; installation or rehabilitation of rain gardens adjacent to City Hall Park; construction or renovation of City Hall garage; installation or renovation of several fire stations within framework plans prepared by architectural firms for use as municipal agencies headquarters during economic emergencies/flood years
